HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The fight over violence in video games is nothing new. However, the fight over whether or not the violence affects young children is heading to the U.S. Supreme Court.
At issue is a 2005 California law signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that aims to keep video games that show killing, maiming and other violent actions out of children's hands.
Like millions of other kids around the nation, Kari Newman's son, Carter, loves his video games. Even his mother admits when it comes to video games, getting them out of her children's hands isn't always easy.
"Video games are addictive," Newman said. "Kids love them. Once they start playing, they will play for hours."
But she says it's not just what is in the game as much as it is how the child reacts to the material.
"It's something, as a parent, you have to watch," Newman said. "You have to talk to your children about it, and be aware what is included in a game."
Newman says she can see how some children may be affected by violent video games, but says it's really up to the parents to control how their children react to anything they see.
"You need to go through it," Newman said. "You need to sit down yourself and play the game to see what's in there."
Even local licensed professional counselors say video games are not the problem. Nicole Webb says the latest studies just don't show the link with video games and violence in children.
"Even with an increase in video game sales, we have not seen an increase in violence. Violence has actually decreased."
With most things in life, Webb says moderation is the key.
"Too much of anything is not good," Webb said. "I would recommend parents look at their child. If they seem to be beating up their brother or sister after a video game, it's probably not good for that particular child."
So, no matter what the ruling is out of Washington this fall, Newman says it falls to the parents to make the final decision.
"Ultimately, it is the parents responsibility," Newman said. "No matter what the Supreme Court says, parents can still buy those games for their kids. Kids can still get ahold of those games whether its at your house or a friend's house."
