Posted by: Kim Hey J Stalin... Did you know the tax payers of WV don't pay my scholarship? Video lottery pays my scholarship. By all means will I stay in WV, but thats my choice. What happens to people who get married and their spouse gets relocated? Is it fair to make them repay their scholarship because they decided to get married and then their spouse gets relocated? Also, The PROMISE is based on your academic success from high school. I don't think its being ungrateful by EARNING it and using. I kept my grades up to keep the scholarship, if I was ungrateful I could have partied it away like a lot of students have. But I think its fair to ask WV what it's willing to do to keep the best and the brightest instate. (:

Posted by: J Tax Payer: A business looks at several metrics before deciding on a location, including the education of the workforce (where is WV in this category?), infrastructure (like water, roads, utilities), accessibility to business partners and the cost of doing business in the state. Seeing as WV can do little to affect most of those categories, the only way to attract business is to make it financially beneficial. Educated people are already leaving the state for better jobs - because the best places to work won't come here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Beth On Promise Scholarships - I agree that graduates who have received and used the Promise Scholarship should not have to repay it. Period. Unless the State of West Virginia is able to provide better pay for our Teachers and a more attractive business climate for potential jobs for our graduates, I would not blame them for seeking opportunites out of State. Mr. Manchin has overstepped on this one. How could anyone pay off a student loan when they can't make any money in WV? And how many years does it specify that a grad has to stay/work in WV? When a student becomes elegible for the scholarship he had good grades - isnt the "Promise" a reward for excellence? Since when do people pay back "rewards"? We need not twist or tweek. Gov please leave the Promise program alone.

Posted by: concern parent My daughter was assaulted in thursday. The cop that came by and took the report and make it like she was lieing and that it was her fault. He didnt even tell us to take her and get a rape kit done or anything. Her clothes was cut and she had marks on her.Now I know why nobody comes forth when things happen to them because would you tell somebody the truth and them make you out to be the one in the wrong and that you was lieing. You can call the mayor and the chief of police and nobody will return your call. Now you tell me who cares about the people in the town. That just make me wonder if maybe Lieh and Samatha just might have said something to the police and they just dont listen to them either.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: steve Now that sne(peachtree doors and windows) has closed, i wonder if the state is going to help retrain those laid of from their jobs or give us incentives to help us go back to work in a decent paying job. Hopefuly they will get a new company into the old plant and do it soon.alot of us need jobs and unemployment is not enough.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Brandon I am getting really suspicious of this "independent" committee setup by WVU to investigate the degree Manchin's daughter. More people need to be outraged and more media outlet need to pick up this story. If her degree turns out to be fraudulent then this undermines the ENTIRE education system of West Virginia and Universities in general.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Terry To Michelle and Roy....Don't forget to check out their "webchannel"!This news station has completely gone to the dogs.Maybe they do so much weather because the news anchors can't read!!They stumble through every story as if they are unprepared. But don't forget a check of sports in the last minute of the show.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Tax Payer Heard were the Chamber of Commerce is wanting business taxes lowerd, and the Governer stated in his State of the Union speech he would lower them, I guess he can do like Charleston, put a user fee for working in the State and then take away all business taxes, and then wonder why people go out of State to find JOBS, and just think a user fee good pay for the promise scholar ships before those folks go out of State for work

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: it wasn't here but still very disturbing news.... Did anyone else read about the man in Texas who sodomized his 18 yr old stepson? The guy caught the stepson sodomizing his 8 yr old half sister. The father told his wife not to get the boy out of jail, but she did. So the father went & picked up the boy from jail, then drove to an abandoned house, & beat him with a baseball bat, & sodomized him with a metal tool. I can see why the father did it. He wanted his stepson to know what it was like to be violated in that manner. I think the kid deserved it. An eye for an eye. Sure perhaps the guy should have let the courts handle it, but when the kid got out, well he had to protect his little girl. What do you think?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: michelle i agree with Roy. I have pretty much quit watching the news because we start off with the weather, then we have a check of todays weather, then 2 minute news story then we have the actual weather, then sports and then a final check of the weather....Its a little ridiculas so I don't even bother anymore.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Roy Why do we need the weather report every two or three min? It doesn't change that much.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Anonymous It is a scholarship. In GA they have what they call the HOPE GRANT. It is money from the lottery, & you DON'T pay it back. That is how my husband was able to attend college when we lived there. I have never heard of a scholarship that made you pay it back, thats false advertising on the states part.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: dave Kims right. If it's a Scholarship... you don't pay it back, you've earned it. Loans you pay back. If you're going to have to pay it back, then it's not really a scholarship is it? Call it the promise loan.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Sadie SO NOW WE LET A YOUNG MAN DIE BECAUSE HE CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY OR HIS STATE FUNDED INSURANCE WON'T AUTHORIZE A PROCEDURE FOR HIM.WHERES THE HEART OF THE DOCTORS AND CAMC!PRO BONO OR HILL BURTON COMES TO MIND WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL CAN'T PAY.EVERY HOSPITAL CAN AFFORD A CASE OR 2 OF CHARITABLE CARE BASED ON NEED FOR ADJUSTMENT TO REVENUE AND PR PURPOSES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: J Stalin Kim, if the taxpayers of WV put you through college, don't you think you owe them something? I understand your frustration, but to accept money from someone and be ungrateful for it is not what a role model should be. You may have got the learnin' but you're missing character.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: citizen Can't we yell about something besides football? Who cares. Here come the comments now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Kim As a senior education student at Marshall University and PROMISE Scholarship recipient, I feel that Gov. Manchin needs to reexamine the possibility of placing a repayment requirement on the PROMISE scholarship. The best and the brightest are not going to stay in state if they cannot find a job or make the money comparable to neighboring locations. Look at my situation, teachers in West Virginia rank 48th in pay, where Kentucky is 35th and Ohio is 14th. I am a 25-minute drive from Chesapeake, OH and a 25-minute drive from Ashland, KY. I stay because I love my town and I love my school. I find it unfair to make students repay their scholarship because West Virginia is not going to pay their teachers anything remotely close to that of two neighboring states. What is West Virginia willing to do to kept the best and the brightest? AND their teachers?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: k All WVU had to do was beat Pitt and they could not get it done, you do not deserve to be ranked ahead of OSU due to the fact that you lost your last game during the season to a 4-7 Pitt team. WVU fans need to get over it you are just a second tier team that does not deserve to be on the same field as OSU...Just look what happened back in 1998 on your home field..Let me know when you finally when a championship then you can talk..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Deanna WVU showed a lot of heart in the Fiesta Bowl, and I admire the effort put forth by those young men. However, just because Ohio State got out coached and out played in their bowl game, it still does not make WVU the better team. Just goes to show you how crucial a coach is to a team, and that Rich Rodriquez took a program that was virtually unheard of and turned them into a program that could actually compete with the BIG BOYS! Unfortunately, I fear things will be reverting back to the days when people would ask "WVU WHO????" Ohio State on the other hand has built a dynasty when it comes to their football program, which includes 7 National Championship Teams. Bring it on Mountaineers!! GO BUCKS!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Christy Dear Anyon, I wasn't trying to change it. There are way more deserving West Virginians that make a difference in our state that would have been incredibly more appropriate! I hardly think honoring someone that gets pregnancy and marriage backwards is an appropriate and moral choice. And what has she done for our State?? Nothing!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Anonymous Christy & Phyllis, get over it. Its already been decided. You can't change it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: jack About WVU playing OSU in football.Don't get stressed call Tress!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Edward You wanted a comment from a OSU fan how about a former player, I played football for Osu 20 yrs ago, and I would love to see a WV and OSU hook-up Even just 1 time And after the loss OSU took from LSU I bet WV would beat OSU and that my freinds is probably a bet I would take WV 42-OSU 14 would be my prediction. NOT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Randy West Virginia fans need to stop complaining about the ranking of Ohio State over them. They had their chance all they had to do was beat a team with a losing record and they would have played Ohio State in the Championship game. You had your chance and you blew it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: JOHN GLAD TO SEE THE GOVERNOR IN CHURCH TONITE. FIVE OTHER DAYS IN THE WEEK...NICE EXAMPLE! THEN WE WONDER WHAT IS WRONG WITH SOCIETY!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: phyllis zi think we could have found a more deserving West Virginian of the Year than Jennifer Garner who is not a good role model for our young people. I would put Randy Moss much highter up on the list.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Christy I along with many other people are appauled that Jennfer Garner was named West Virginian of the year. Why did we have to go so low in the barrel to find someone? We have so other talented, deserving WEST VIRGINIANS to choose from. Garner is certainly not a role model for our young children, having gotten pregnant before marriage. Why are things like this just swept under the rug?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Betty The coverage of Obama is greater this morning than that of the winner, Hillary Clinton, on MSNBC, AND I'm certain it is the same on all the major networks. I want to SCREAM from the rooftops "get off your high horse, and admit that the American people have a mind of their own." Congratulations New Hampshire.

Posted by: Anonymous Hi, I'm just trying to find out if the Water Boil Advisory has been lifted in Dunbar yet? We have hardly heard anything about this and now have a sick family because we found out too late. Does the water company have any kind of obligations to let the public know when things like this happen?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Timothy I have a comment about the "USER FEE". I understand Danny Jones has passed a $2 a week user fee now instead of the $1 a week. I wish I knew where this user fee money is going to. I travel 8 1/2 miles to work every day and then another 8 1/2 going home. I do this 5 days a week. Sometimes 6 or 7. Traveling the 8 1/2 miles to and from work I see no improvements of any kind when I go to work. Danny Jones says the user fee goes towards fixing the roads. Well Mr. Jones, which roads are you talking about. They sure aren't the ones I go on. So this means I will be paying more for no improvements. First it was $1 a week, now $2. What's next Mr. Jones, are you going to make us pay $5 a week? $10 a week? $20? It's eventually going to go to giving my whole pay check at work to Danny Jones. Some people I work with don't even live in Charleston. Why should they have to pay the user fee?

Posted by: Patricia Now that the holidays are gone,it was nice to know that a few charities were there to help. But,one in particular didn't.The Brothers of the Wheel motorcycle group were very prejudiced and accepted only those who they wanted to help and ignored those who really needed it.We've written a letter to them many times over the years and even donated money when they were out in Madison collecting. It wasn't fair.We won't be asking them for their help again. Thanks but no thanks
