TAXES.Do you know what this word means? Do you know how and when you pay taxes? Do you know what your taxes pay for? What does the gas tax pay for? What does the food tax pay for? How about your property taxes and your municiple fees? Most people think of the big tax day of April 15th.That is the deadline to pay your income tax.You pay the state,if your state has an income tax,and everyone pays your federal income tax.Have any of you ever asked what your federal income tax goes to? I read so often on this site about people acusing the Democrats for higher taxes, yet they don't realize that the biggest proportion of the taxes they pay is to the federal income tax.And you get nothing in return!Wait, how can this be? We get all kinds of things for our fed income tax.National defence, highways, national parks.WRONG,WRONG,WRONG!Taxes are good,if you get something in return.Your fed income tax only pays interest to the central banks. It's true! You get nothing for that tax!Get mad about that!

Good people of WV have you noticed on the news we have not seen one tree hugger shoveling mud out of a flooded building like our own Gov. Joe did down in Mingo Co. I read where the mayor or Matewan got a lot of help from coal miners and there equipment donated by our coal companies to clean out streets, make a way through all the washed out trees, and get to the older folk who need medicine or food. Once again, congratulations noble coal miners for coming to the rescue of your neighbors. Have any of you people went down to the rent-a-center and asked for a bulldozer or an endloader lately well you dont get them there you get them from a coal mine and there has to be a highly trained person to run it right or somebody will get hurt. A good dozer can cut a road where nature never intended it and this I call progress. So far I have watched this very channel and I am yet to see any windmills moving downed trees, mud, cutting roads, etc...this should be a good lesson good WV people.

you bring up a legitimate arguement.everything can be a problem if not done by sensible practices.but to listen to the tree huggers we shouldn,t use any natural rescources.the so called enviornmentalist want everybody but them to not use the natural rescources we have.al gore is a prime example of hyprocracy and the politicans who think our sacrifice isn,t to much to ask,but don,t include them in sacrificing.but i think most logging operations are doing a better job, enviornamilly.

To the dems. blaming bush on nancy pelosi little problem i have to say this..she is either lying or an idiot and it's scary to think she is third in line to run the country. I think big earl has nothing to massy coal i think he is robert byrd and that's not a bad thing. no matter what folks want to think, coal is the blood of West Virginia. I do believe it flooded in areas where there is not mountian top mining for miles. when it rains very heavy the valleys can only handle so much run off. the price of rugged but beautiful land that is West "by God" Virginia. whoops did I say God. Sorry didn't mean to make someone made. big earl i to am a big fan of taco bell as well as KFC. good eats.

Who is that Keith guy and why is he so stressed? If you want to see what kind of hoax your "God" given rights are google {Japanese Americans 1942} and see how those Americans lost there "rights" to ANYTHING for the simple reason of being born in a different country.Did the same revocation of right for Muslim Americans get striped after 9/11?If you dont think that the second amendment rights couldn't get altered the way the G'ments Patriot Act infringed on the 4th amendment rights then you need a strong dose of reality.Put faith in God ,not politicians.

Hello people of WV this is Big Earl with a question. Have any of you people ever eaten those really good steak quisilideaas at the Taco bell restaurant? I always liked that little dog that spoke Mexican and it is a real shame he had to go away thank you PETA nuts. Anyway, there are a lot of imitators trying to make those things but people this is the same with these tree hugger types that invade our great state and pretend to love the land and put our mining industry under seige with all there talk about hard working coal miners doing unspeakable things to the land (trying to be polite here on a family site) and blowing up the earth and killing all the little animals off. Well people we have to be careful because these greenie hippies in Washington DC are throwing in with Chinese hippies in so called oriental “sweat shops” to make these light bulbs that are plum full of poision for 9 cents a hour and look what the kids are taught in school to bring these toxic light bulbs into there homes. One of these days you will wake up and they will not be bringing home Harry Potter books but instead hippie tree hugger books by Hairy Pothead writing about the evil wizard coal operator and the disappearing polar bear but what you are really going to get is the disappearing coal industry and electric with it when the coal miners go south.

This is the first time in a few months I have bothered to leave comments because of the nasty tone and I must say Anna is right. The only reason I'm on this website is to find out about our local GM dealerships. However, yes, Big Earl has some serious, serious issues. As do a few notable others. If people want to show their ignorance let 'em. One more thing . . . I came across a great quote earlier this week. "The higher the monkey climbs the flagpole, the more his a#! is visible."

Once again carveontruth I am with you but what I was responding to was another post down the line that suggests one should not defend oneself from attack or harm. Such as, on Dec. 7th 1941 America's pressing enemy was Japan, not just the Fed. Calm down, that's all I meant. I heard Beck talking about the Fed the other day and thought of you, wondering if you were tuned in. I heard Rush mention a memo obtained by a US Senator from Wyoming (from the Justice Dept.) that was 9 pages in length and noted that there was no evidence to support the CO2 claim in global warming, noting it is a hoax. Great information. He had a clip of him questioning Lisa Jackson at a hearing. Man made global warming is a hoax perpetrated by the globalists. And finally, yes, I will cite the verses for you but in the mean time get a bible, turn to Revelation and read how Jesus comes back, at the end of the book, and what he does to antichrist's armies gathered in the valley of Meggido. Rambo pales in comparison.

forgiveness is about not being tormented unjustly.sacrifice is given to a stranger only after you;ve followed gods command to take care of your family first.peace is only accomplished by mutual agreement.and conservatives cant, wont give up morals or values to just get along.premeditated sadistic murder of unborn babies, infanticide, stealing, lying,to lazy to provide for our own family needs .these are not necessarily christian views, just rules for decency.you dont turn the other cheek if someone is tring to harm or kill you.capital punishment for a vicious killer or child rapist needs to be done, thats gods vengance.god as rambo prettywell describes what the bible says.get it out and read it sometimes.you,ll be shocked at what god tellpeople to do to protect their loved ones.if your way is what i have to do to get along call me contrary...

Maybe if the Gallipolis Tribune didn't skip all the crime that is happening over the county we wouldn't have as much crime. I would think it would be embarasing to see your name in the paper associated with underage drinking and etc. Sometimes the parents do not even know because the kids take care of it so the parents do not know. If it was in the paper there would be a chance that the parents would find out.

Well hello and greeting good working people of WV this is Big Earl thinking about that movie the Rocket boys about Homer Hickam a local boy what done good with his life, his father had a line in that movie that said "Homer, you dummy, if coal fails, then steel fails, and if steel fails this country fails. Well sadly today we see steel and coal failing in our communities thanks to the efforts of these greenie hippie types who want to send everything back to the covered wagon. Well coal mining families remember these is the same people that tell us 25% of there so called global warming is due to cows doing there business, so next they will be after your cows. These people dont have any sense. I mean look at the things our industires give us computers in the schools for our children to learn on and ball fields for them to play on and not turn into dope and pill heads. The only thing your school will ever get out of those OVAC people is a windmill and how can a kid play on a windmill?

Acutally it is not that amazing at all. It is simple common sense to defend oneself and well within the boundary of scripture to defend and protect your family. What liberals have never learned, and probably will never acknowledge until it happens to them, i.e., they are in line next, is that evil does exist and you must fight it in order to not only stay alive but especially free. Using your line of thought we would have been a colony of England forever, or if not that, Japan, Germany, the Soviet Union, etc...no nuclear "armorment" (? call Mr. Webster) and owning a firearm under the blessing of the 2nd Amendment is not that amazing to anybody who has any common sense and perception at all.

Why is it that if Bubba flips his tractor anywhere in West Virginia, it's on WSAZ, but there's zero coverage about Ashland unless it's about KDMC or AKSteel? There was a body found in Ashland yesterday in the neighborhood near ACTC, but of course there's not a single word about it on here. The only reason i know anything is because I have friends living in that neighborhood. God forbid WSAZ covers it. I guess your coverage area ends at KDMC.

Having read a lot of these posts,I've been noticing every time there is a reply to a comment from a far right(at least they read like that to me)person, the person who was addressed just comes back with Peta nuts, hippies, liberals,or welfare recipients. My ancestors loved the trees, animals of this land, also held what would be considered liberal and hippie ideas now. They also were great warriors and hunters.Unfortunately they let your ancestors get to much of a foothold on our land before realizing how devious and destructive they were. Now many of your people are starting to see(as we have always)the land is a living thing to be taken care of and respected, not ravaged and ruined for personal gratification, this is good,I hope mankind will relearn to live with our planet in ways which do not poison it's air, water and soil. For we do not have another planet to move to if we destroy this one.We can't go back, but we can change I hope, and have many generations caring for our earth for all time.

In the State of WV we have known for many years which areas regularly flood, and which areas may flood. Rainwater rate can not be predicted in advance of these events, but the State could do something by examining these areas for improvements in drainage. MTR may very well be the catalyst of the runoff - increasing amounts of rain, without the previous topography to hold it. Stopping MTR is not the answer, proper drainage & containment is required. Common sense dictates that you cannot remove or disturb tons of rocks, trees & soil that would normally absorb & deflect runoff and not expect the surrounding areas to be affected. The water has no where else to go but down. Planning for proper drainage has to be part of "responsible" MTR. We'll never get control of the flooding until we give water some place to go and an outlet to get there. With all of the people & places in the world that need water, WV could be supplying a great natural resouce.

I think big earl is a public spokesman for massey coal. We have nothing to fear from tree huggers or peta, they are trying to preserve the enviroment for future generations, seems as some want to use and destroy everything today and to hell with futures generations- let them fend for themselves. If boone co. is the highest in the state for weekly wage, how many people earn this much? Scary to know that people so backward and so ignorant are making the most money. bet there is a fourwheeler in every yard, a gun rack in the rear window and a dog box for ole blue on the back and a 4x4 that gets 8 miles to the gallon. brings back the old saying- a fool and their money are soon parted-. Folks the next election i am seriously thinking on running for governor. Will put wv first and formost as almost heaven not the land of the uncaring and lost! I want wv to survive so my children and grandchildren can enjoy the things me and my grandparents enjoyed. Has the coal cos. done anything to help out

You are right, I should not be worried about whether or not our news channel uses correct English. Afterall we are in West Virginia and God forbid we should act like educated individuals. It is posts like the one that responded to my earlier concern about made-up words that feeds those stupid stereotypes about West Virginia. Hello good working people of WV this is your friend Big Earl with news of a hippie green plot. It seems the good old light bulb has been outlawed by these hippies by the year 2012 and we will all be forced to use these curly fry bulbs what if they explode they have enough mercury in them to build a bomb. It seems these bulbs are made in "Communist" China, the key word being "Commune-ist" just like our hippie longhair friends from Sanfran Cisco in there hippie communes. These people in China cant make decent dog food without Rover going belly up. What makes anybody want to use there bulbs? Do you people remember that lead flavored toothpaste that came from these "Commune-ists?" Or how about the poison kiddie toys? Point is, if we the people do not take a stand against these green hippies and there attacks on our coal industry and jobs, especially in our schools, where some have thrown in with the tree huggers, your kids are liable to be reading books by hairy pothead one of these days.

Guess you have to pound the message in even harder about coal: it made our great area what it is today and without it we would be a dust bowl. Chickens: no they are not real people or inter poultry marriage would be legal. Earl, no matter how simple you break it down for these pointdexters they just dont understand simplicity. The blame game goes on and on. The recent flooding is an example. The greenies say that MTR causes flooding, the miners say, does not! When a long rainy season saturates the ground and then heavy rains come it will always flood. That is life in the Appalachians. Has been happening for millions of years. That is why our mountains are just little nubbins. Erosion washes the soil away. My Grandma used to tell me that when she was a child that the Guyandotte would flood every year, and that the water was clear, or greenish, and that afterwards white sand would be deposited along the banks. This was before mining and settlements were common. When I was a child the Guyandotte also flooded every year, but the water was black, and coal dust was deposited on everything. The R.D. Bailey Dam was constructed and everything changed below the lake. The water cleared and turned green again, and flooding deminished . The difference today is the mud that comes with high water. Where you recon it come?

They should not continue with the increase if they are not going to live up to their end of the bargain. What are they planning on using the additional funds for if not for the seven additional officers? Don't you think all these issues should have been addressed in the early stages of the planning? I hope this is resolved and the officers hired as we enjoy eating and shopping in Huntington and alot of times we are concerned for our safety as i'm sure others feel the same.

I'm reading all the comments throwing blame on MTR for our devastation.....right now, it doesn't matter who or whats to blame - WE NEED HELP! I was fortunate, but many of my family & friends have lost nearly everything in this flood! Instead of pointing fingers, how about making a donation of money, food or cleaning supplies to help us out..or better yet come on down, roll up your sleeves & help us dig our way out of all the flood mud! Many of us can't get out of our houses, let alone get to work, our kids can't go to school & the end is anything but near. There will be plenty of time for your "whats to blame" game later..right now it's time for everyone to pitch in & do what they can to help all of us in southern WV & eastern KY get back to some form of normalcy.

not one person stands up and shouts when they blow up a mountain to put a four lane through it, a strip mall, etc! not one of you...hypocrites! at least coal is something we all use everday. open your freaking eyes and stop griping on here. things aren't going to change. it will always be this way and running your mouths on a website won't change a thing, but hey its your time and effort your wasting.

The current flooding is different than the flooding experienced in '77 and '84. If you are from that area or familiar with that area, then you should already know this fact. Again, many communities are flooding like they NEVER have before. Yes, we've had heavy rains before and flooding before, but this kind of devastation did not happen with the same intensity and frequency as prior to MTR.

Did it ever occur to you how much our region depends on the coal industry? We are not referred to as the coal fields for nothing. Our country is in a recession, and if you take away more mining jobs it is going to get much worse. Coal is the #1 industry, and if those jobs are lost then the effects will trickle down to every other business and resource in our area. I know that you are worried about the environment, but it is a stretch to blame all of this on MTR. If the mining industry goes down you may not have a job to afford to pay your bills for the home you love so much. Is there really enough proof to convict an industry that has been beneficial to our area? If the coal jobs go, all that will be left in this area will be the people already getting a government check... everyone else will need to leave to find work. So which is the lesser evil, an industry providing jobs that everyone loves to blame when something bad happens...or the people not from here telling us how to live???

I dont understand. If a stream is what turns into a river and floods then why is it a bad thing to cover up the stream. It also floods in places where there is no mining what about that. I am trying hard to remember but I cant recollect a lot of MTR jobs around Williamson and Matewan in 77 or 84. Why did it flood then. Seems to me all you anti mining people who use any excuse to hate on the coal industry are predictably jumping on this. I heard from family that it had rained all week and really hard all day friday after a while it just cant get soaked up by the dirt anymore and it floods. That aint rocket science but lets all jump on our jobs and run them off to. That will really help.

I lived in Mingo County most of my life and was there during the '77 flood. During my entire life, I've never seen it this bad in the Mingo County and Pike County. Massive rains have occurred over the past 40 years and up until the past 10 years, the flooding witnessed now did not happen with similar rain fall amounts. I've witnessed flash floods before. This was not just a flash flood; this is what MTR causes. Deep mining has long ago caused many water wells in the area to go barren and/or caused water to be of such poor quality that it was not potable. We've sold our souls.

Too bad Dr. Van Deren wasn't a Marshall football player, so he could have been treated "the same as everyone else" as so many others wrote in. I mean, having his record wiped clean of any felonies after 6 months would only mean he could start saving lives again, not just play football! Give me a break!!!! Let's cater to those who entertain us, and smack down those who have worked towards saving lives. What's wrong with this picture?

Well people there is a rat in the chicken coop and it is a two footed one and it is these PETA nuts at it again. Hello good people of WV this is Big Earl with a word of warning to my favorite restaurant the colonel at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I seen in the news where they offered 10 million free chicken meals to people who would print off this coupon and take it down to the store. Well I got mine but apparently there was such a demand for the chicken, and this should tell these PETA people something, that the Colonel pulled the plug and shut it down. You know people I suspect a hippie plot and would not put it past these PETA types one bit, they are to blame, to have done most of the requesting to keep the others of us who love a good chicken dinner from getting ours. All they have to do is log onto the Colonels store and keep printing off the coupons as long as they have enough printers and ink they can get all they want. So don’t panic good friends at Kentucky Fried you are not on the hook for 10 million chicken dinners. Truth be told there is probably only a few chicken lovers who got through to get the free dinners after all. Chickens are not people and somebody at PETA in Norfork need to figure that out. There are only two things to think about where a chicken is concerned, regular or extra crispy. And a big bowl of gravy to.

Jeannie, according to Church Lady("Childrens get your arks ready! The end times comin'! Probably because all those Sodomites.") this flood must have been a result of peoples sex life. Three things you don't want to question in this state is the Bible, the coal industry or Wal-Mart. I hope you are thick skinned, because you are about to receive a weeks worth of cussing. And don't waste your time getting out the poster paper and crayons, because most still don't understand it even if you draw them a picture. Most think Big Earl is this states anwser to Albert Einstein.

Good points about mountain top removal, Jeannie. The Jan. '09 issue of Smithsonian Magazine has an excellent article about MTR in WV. Some of the aerial photographs featured in the article are real "eye-openers" as to the devastation.

Hey Jeannie, did you ever think to blame it on the rain?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: Jeannie on May 10, 2009 at 11:38 PM
Hey Big Earl - I need to hear some more of your views on how good Mountain Top Removal is for the communities. I hope you've heard the latest - there's even more flat ground, flushed clean of homes and businesses, so the coal companies can build more golf courses. What use does a person have for golf courses if they can't keep their homes from flooding. Flooding in Southern WVA is unlike any flooding since the great flood of '77, but the damage is even more widespread now and occurs far more often than in the past. I suppose you can attribute something other than Mountain Top Removal for the damage done; however, it seems logical that covering up and filling in streams and tearing up trees and vegetation that used to funnel large amounts of rain is tearing up what's left of beautiful Southern WVA. This flash flooding is directly caused by MTR - there's no other culprit that can be named. Homeplaces that have lasted 100 or more years are being destroyed, disintegrated, & washed away.
