Posted by: Anonymous the problem is with animal shelters is the lack of funding they present. overcrowding occurs. when folks approach shelters to find a pet they become overtaken with the image of the shelter and it deters them from bringing home a pet from the shelter. the stigma is that shelter animals carry disease. if we improve funding, the appearance of the shelters and provide better animal health care while being in captivity, trust will follow.

Posted by: J When I lived in another state, I went to an animal shelter because I thought it would be the right thing to do. There were so many hoops to jump through and fees, that it was cheaper and easier to purchase a dog with a pedigree.

Posted by: Brenda On the animal shelter issue - perhaps if the shelters or local veterinarians offered a program where people could get their pets spayed or neutered free or at least offer a reduced rate, more animal owners could take the necessary steps to control the pet population. Getting the animal numbers under control is the only way to enable the shelters to continue to help the animals which are homeless because of negligent owners. Animal clinics make a wad of money caring for our animals. What could they do to help control the pet populations? People who love animals and have more than one to care for often find it difficult and costly to spay and neuter their pets.

Posted by: alarming A bridge deemed structurally deficient does not necessarily mean it is unfit for traffic, but there are a number of concerns with the Ironton-Russell Bridge, said Mike Loeffler, a bridge inspector for the Ohio Department of Transportation. In 2000, ODOT recommended that the bridge be replaced. It has since undergone several emergency modifications so that it can be used in cold weather, Loeffler said. “The bridge was only closed twice last year for a short duration, but it has a lot of structural issues,” he said. “We inspect the bridge annually and if it is shut down for cold weather it will be reinspected. Thus, it may be reinspected three or four times a year.” In 2006, plans to replace the Ironton-Russell bridge were rejected as the contracting bids for the original design came in too high, Loeffler said. The state is once again in the preliminary stages of the replacement process. Consultants are studying how to redesign the replacement, he said. The bridge received

Posted by: tired of hamster running on a wheel to get web service I'd love to read n view your website, but considering most of WV does NOT have DSL or Broadband capibilities, it makes it kinda hard! Since you R the NEWS, why don't you do a NEWS story on that? How yet again, WV is behind every other state. The Greenbriar wants a disguised pine tree cell tower? Heck we'd be happy with a cell tower period disguised as a cell tower! O maybe that's why we can't find one in rural Cabell County..it's in disquise (eyeroll) or perhaps it's because as usual the Cabell County Commission does nada to bring upgrades and improvements into our area. Perhaps someone should remind them, they represent ALL of Cabell County, not just the Huntington,Barboursiville area. Here's a thought? Your the NEWS why don't you ask them why they don't push to bring 'rural' (11 miles from Hunt/or Barborsville, if you consider that rural, into the 21st century? But then again that would mean you would have to not just report the news, but question the news makers as well!

Posted by: Anonymous Ironton Ohio has needed a new bridge for years and it will be many more years to come before they will be able to build one. Funding has not been there time and time again. It's a rotting bridge, dangerous. Maybe this will be a wake-up call for Ironton area residents. Safety isn't much to ask for.

Posted by: ROBIN TO 70S LADY I AGREE WHEN DID IT BECOME SOMEONE ELSE DECISION TO TELL MOTHERS HOW TO FEED THE BABIES THAT CRAZY FOR ONE THING I READ OF MOTHERS BEING OUT IN PUBLIC AND BREAST FEED THIER BABIES AND THE PUBLIC TAKE IT OFFENSE TO THE EXPOSURE OF YOUNG CHILDREN AROUND WATCHING WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMMING TO WHEN SOMEONE TELLS YOU HOW TO LIVE IM ALL ABOUT FREEDOM AND WE THE AMERICANS ARE LOOSING ANY WE HAVE WHILE WERE FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM IN OTHER COUNTRIES WE MAY WANT TO LOOK WHATS HAPPEING AT HOME

Posted by: 70s Lady I heard on the news this morning that in New York State, the "officials" in the state are requiring hospitals to eliminate baby formula and are going to make it mandatory that women who are giving birth in those hospitals breast feed their babies. Excuse me! The decision a woman makes about her life and lifestyle should remain the total decision of the woman, not a group of "officials" in this country. Choice should remain the decision of the individual, not the government.

Posted by: Greg TableGamer you sound like these church groups around here. They can have bingo but then turn around and fight against a deck of cards. But if you feel so strong about this issue then why are you working in a casino? They must pay you pretty well for you to work in a place that you are so against and which you feel is very dangerous. And while you were on this news site did you read any of the stories? Maybe you and these church groups should. If you do you will find that we have murders, drugs problems, prostitutes etc... in our area already. Heck we already have people crawling under a womans house stealing her copper water lines while she is sleeping. Maybe if we had a thousand new jobs in this area some of these things might change for the better. I myself would rather have my neighbor making a living working at a casino than to have him cooking meth in his basement or stealing some elderly ladies plumbing.

Posted by: acs for the lady last week that said she keeps loosing her pets. I better solution than telling people not to pick up strays is to tag your dog. If I see an animal, the first thing i'm going to do is check for a tag. it's part of being a responsible pet onwer. also try putting up lost poster and checking local shelters.

Posted by: Sharon "The gasoline market now appears amply supplied with the end of the heavy driving season only about a month away,” wrote Jim Ritterbusch, president of Ritterbusch & Associates in Galena, Ill., in a research note. That’s part of the reason gasoline futures have fallen nearly 29 cents over the last two weeks. Quote from AP Press" How much do you want to bet the with the market closing out today @ $78.41 on the barrel we all will wake up tomorrow morning and it will be $3.00 again. Apparently there's trouble in Nigeria;a kidnapping in oil country; which happens to be a key supplier to the U.S. The rules of the game will change again.

Posted by: Darla Please explain to me where all of the money for the city user fee in Huntington is going! Not one of the streets are in good condiiton and why do only people who work have to pay? What about all of the other city "users" such as students, residents who work elsewhere, or individuals who do not work? I would be all for the fee if I could see that the money is being used where it is supposed to be.

Posted by: CJ My son and his family just returned to the states from the Bahamas for a family vacation. Each member of the family was charged $22.00 cash to re-enter the United States which was to be paid to Homeland Security. When the kids asked what would happen if they did not have the $22.00, they were told they could not board the airplane. On one hand, we have hundreds of people crossing our border illegally, and they are not being required to obey the immigration laws of the country. On the other hand, we have tax-paying, law-abiding citizens going out of their homeland who must pay cash to get back in. Something sure is wrong with this picture!

Posted by: Arloa Re: your story -- Dial-up vs DSL or Broadband.. When I lived in Huntington I had an ISP but when I moved to Barboursville I choice Verizon DSL. I find it is no faster than Netzero dial-up. Sometimes while I am reading WSAZ's home page it fades and I am left staring at my desktop. I don't know why I get disconnected. It hasn't happened this time. I've been given different reasons but could it be the surroundings/atmosphere?

Posted by: TableGamer I live in a state where gambling is legal. I came here to visit some family and find that an issue before them is whether or not to allow table gaming. While the money may seem to be attractive your politicians should look at the crime rate involved in making such a dire move to raise capitol project capital. I would advise that before ruining the serenity and friendliness that West Virginia is notorious for that these items be reviewed no matter how large a hotel or work force investment you arrive at. I work in a casino at a table dealing black jack cards. I get held up approx three times a month. However in the casino I work in there is security, security does nothing for desperation however. I have been held up by patrons using materials obtained from inside the casino. There needs to not be a weapon but a means and the means they are out of money and they believe the workers to have personal money on them so therefore it is illegal for us to carry personal money inside the casino.
