Wet Snow to Coat Mountains

The calendar says it is spring, but in one last gasp, Old Man Winter will snort up a wet snowfall tonight above the 3,000 elevation level in the nearby mountains.

Since most of us live below the 1,000 foot level in the Ohio, Big Sandy and Kanawha Valleys, mainly cold rain showers will fall, but some wet snow flakes can fall late tonight in the heavier showers.

Travelers heading south out of Charleston on the turnpike will likely run thru some heavy snow showers with the grass whitened and perhaps the Interstate briefly slush coated.

Sunrise on Tuesday may well be white on the high ground of Fayette, Raleigh and Nicholas Counties. That means towns like Beckley, Oak Hill and Summersville will have the rooftops and cars coated with wet snow. Meanwhile, the high ground at Flat Top, Snowshoe, Canaan and Timberline can measure as much as 3 inches of sopping wet snow.

Then after a chilly Tuesday when highs will struggle to get into the 50s in Huntington and Charleston, where skies clear at night, the stage will be set for a late season frost. So this word to the wise, if you have potted plants out or have already planted beans, peppers or tomatoes, you may have to cover up on Tuesday evening.
