May Weather Roller Coaster

The children's silly song says a lot about the weather in May if you read between the lines. The weather is supposed to take us by surprise in May and this year will be no exception.

Take this week! From “marvy” to “muddy” and from cozy to frosty, the weather for the next ten days will run the gamut. That’s a fancy way of saying conditions will be changeable thru Mother’s Day weekend and beyond.

So look for a high in the 80s and low in the 30s by May 15th. Throw in a Top 10er along side a Dirty Dozen Day and you get the picture, our forecasts at WSAZ.COM will keep you on your toes.

If you are looking for warm and dry weather, then the early part of this week is perfect for your outdoor plans. Gardeners, your green “John Marra” thumb should be hard at work Tuesday and Wednesday, planting and tilling, pruning and primping your landscape.

By late week and the weekend, we will be hard at work timing showers and thundershowers. Since May is off to a dry start, and since dry Mays can lead to hot summers, we need rain this month or else!

At this point, I sense one last risk of frost AWAY FROM TOWN, so if you live in the country or say more than a half mile from a river, I would place out in your garden only what you are capable of covering later on. Early call is for a late season frost threat just after the Mother’s Day weekend.

Tuesday is ladies day at the local links and I have a TC Top 10er for all you golfing gals. Best to tee off say after 9 AM, since the early morning temperature will start in the coolish 40s. There will even be some mid 30s on those low lying, dew soaked greens.

Temperatures will warm with reckless abandon by noon (65) en route to a high of 75-80 by 4 pm. By the way, highs will make the magical 80s by Wednesday!

The Mother’s Day weekend forecast is similar to the last 3; namely, the risk of showers will be around. But when and where will it rain and how hard and how chilly/mild will those would-be showers fall? Those questions can’t be answered until the showers form and that won’t be until the weekend.

One final word, tree pollen levels remain stubbornly high as the Oak trees let out one last gasp of pollen. Peak values are way off their late April seasonal highs, but still well above the 100 grain per cubic meter threshold to send folks to the medicine cabinet. I expect tree season to wane comprehensively by next week!
