March Does It Again!
This e-mail just in at 12:10 AM
I just thought I would pass to you an interesting note. A big flash of lighting just happened. This is the first time I have saw lighting during a snow storm. I know it happens but I heard it’s very rare. Also it is now starting to ICE pretty bad and continues to thunder. This is some weird weather! Kyle
I have 2 takeaways from this e-mail (from Scioto County, I surmise). I want to hit the road pronto before roads ice up here in Huntington and when we get lightning and thunder in a winter storm, someone is going to get clocked with a quick half a foot of snow. Hey it took until almost spring for a REAL WINTER STORM to show its face!
Leave it up to March to come through with the biggest winter storm of the season. Here at the witching hour, Todd and I have taken Marina’s excellent forecast from noon and added data from the late night runs to come up with a most likely scenario.
I. Kanawha Valley, Spencer, Ripley, Pt. Pleasant region and Coalfields misty rain will begin freezing before dawn then change to sleet and finally snow. Snow and Ice accumulations of up to 3”. I-64 slickest through noon.
II. River Cities: gut says an ice storm predawn will be followed by a morning into early afternoon snowfall. 3”. Again roads slickest, iciest before 10 AM.
III. Southern Ohio, Northern Kentucky Snow and Ice Storm causes power outs with more snow toward Scioto River and more sleet/ice toward Ohio River (Ironton-Crown City-Gallipolis-Pomeroy). 5” OR 6" on average, more west. Pike County may wind with 10”. Travel on RT 23 N or 32 W not recommended.
IV. Cincinnati, Columbus, Louisville, Cleveland. Blizzard conditions with 10”-15" and blowing and drifting. Airports likely closed most of the day.
V. Northern WV: light early morning Mix turns over to snow with 4” by evening. Clarksburg north will have it hardest in afternoon. I-77, I-79 snow covered and slippery much of the day.
By the way, the e-mails are adding up. Why the thunder and lightning in a sleet, snow and freezing rain storm? The air is being lifted incredibly fast. Fast enough for condensation to occur at a high pace. That means thunder in summer so why not winter! It doesn’t happen often in winter except in the big March storms which we are in!
Pardon any mis-spellings, I want to get home before the bridges ice up!
Soon Time to Think Spring!
P.S. Home and Garden and State Girls fans, double check with Josh in the morning and roads should improve as snow/sleet let up in afternoon!
