The image you see above is the sun (notice I have to use a picture from the desert southwest). I simply wanted to reacquaint everyone to it again since it's been gone since, what, October? All sarcasm aside, we've seen plenty of damp and dreary days this month. Finally, the eastern trough responsible for these conditions will give way to a drier, warmer weather pattern just in time for the Memorial Day weekend.
From a Kanawha Valley perspective, the weekend looks great for anyone interested in the annual Vandalia Gathering at the state capital grounds (7pm Friday through 6pm Sunday). Be sure to bring the sunscreen as sunshine will be abundant both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Afternoon temperatures are expected to finally return to seasonal averages (upper 70s) both days. My fiancee, D'Arcy, and I have an agreement for the weekend. She's a huge fan of Vandalia so we plan to hit the gathering again this year. I made a promise last year that I would attempt some sort of actual dancing. I have absolutely ZERO talent when it comes to dancing/rhythm. When I made the promise, I thought I had an entire year to brush up on things...all I bring to the table is a high school and college knowledge of the mosh pit (I still wear the Doc Martins but I'm not sure if they'll work at Vandalia).
Another great outdoor event this weekend is to take in a baseball game at Appalachian Power Park. The West Virginia Power return home for a four-game series against the Lakewood Blue Claws (this is the other half of the agreement between D'Arcy and I...the good news, no dancing at the ballpark). The first game of the series is Saturday evening at 7:05pm. It is also Superhero Night so I may have to break out the Space Ghost get-up several months before Halloween. I look like a total idiot but, c'mon, it's Space Ghost.
Conditions will be beautiful for the first pitch as the sun will slowly begin its trek behind the press box (and parking structure). Game time temperatures will be in the 70s to begin the game and, assuming it's an average lengthed game, end in the 60s. Nothing warmer than a long sleeved shirt and a pair of jeans is needed (I'm sure many will be happy with short sleeves and shorts but there's something about bare skin and a plastic seat that makes me go more for a jeans look...perhaps it's just me). Of course, the Space Ghost costume is made from 100% polyester so I'm sure I would have dropped 10-pounds by the fourth inning (0.71 stone for our British friends).
Anyway, the weather should cooperate for the four game series as the last game will be played Tuesday morning (hopefully before the next cold front approaches). I'll fine tune that forecast as the holiday approaches.
Whatever your plans are, it's looking rather pleasant for our region and the majority of the eastern seaboard for this Memorial Day weekend. Drier, warmer weather will be here just in time for whatever you have planned.
