Holiday Weekend Aims to Please
Of the three summer Holiday weekends, the Memorial 3 day affair has been the most notorious weather-wise thru the years. Just ask anyone who lives along 4-Pole creek in Huntington about 1990 (when Ritter Park was swamped and homes were flooded) or folks who live in the Coalfields about 2004 (when Flash Floods and Tornado Warns came fast and furiously).
But not so this year as a very pleasant spell of late spring weather is settling in. Cool nights in the 40s (even some 30s are likely in the WV mountains) and sunny warm days in the 70s and 80s are assured. With the Rhododendron in full bloom and gas prices thru the roof, a short trip to a state park has a long trip to the beach beat by a mile.
The temperature will stair step day to day so a 75-80-85 scheme for Saturday-Sunday-Monday is in the cards.
Race car fans heading to the Brickyard for the Indy 500 or to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600 will find similar conditions. Warm days chock full of sun and pleasant eves under a near full moon will grace the Hooiser and Tar Heel States.
At the Grand Strand, an onshore wind will keep daytime temperatures in the 70s thru early Sunday with showers around at times on Saturday. Skies should clear and highs warm into the 80s by Sunday-Monday. Surf temperature is in the low to mid 70s.
Keep in mind it has been a damp and cool May and many folks will be getting their first sun of the season this weekend. That’s a recipe for sunburn, so load up with the sun block or screen before heading out!
Locally, Todd has blogged about the big doings in Charleston at Vandalia and Appy Power Park. Check it out at
As for other events going on this weekend, Memory Days in Grayson includes down home Appalachian music, mouth watering funnel cakes and a big parade thru town (Saturday afternoon).
In Ironton, tens of thousands will jam downtown for the longest running Memorial day parade in the USA. Parade time is 10 AM. Look for the WSAZ First Warning Weather Van and yours truly as part of the matting throng!
I will add more events to the above list, so check back tonight and Friday!
