SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The deadline for victims of recent flooding to register for federal disaster assistance is less than a month away.

The Federal Emergency Management Administration says people affected by May storms in Calhoun, McDowell, Mingo, Raleigh and Wyoming counties have until July 14 to register for aid.

FEMA said Monday that businesses seeking disaster loans from the Small Business Administration also should apply by the July 14 deadline.

BEWARE! I filed for and received approximately $400 in FEMA aid about fifteen years ago for minor flood damage. Guess what? It was followed by a nice letter from my mortgage company (all mortgage companies routinely receive notice of FEMA payees - public information, you know) informing me that because I live in a flood plain they had seen fit to provide me with flood insurance - through their company - at a rate of about $500 per year. Up goes my mortgage payment. After two years of supplying my mortgage company with FEMA maps of flood plains and affidavits that I did not reside in a flood plain, guess what? They sold my mortgage to another company and refused to refund a dime. Case closed. There is no free lunch, and anything you get from FEMA will have unintended consequences.
