60 Moments: Evolution of Weather Technology

Helping you plan what to wear every morning has been one important responsibility of WSAZ's weather team over the last six decades.

But, the tools our forecasters have used have changed quite a bit.

Back in the early days, we tracked severe weather using our very own radar weather scanner and had the region's only full-time meteorologist.

D.J., Jule and others used data provided by the National Weather Service to present the forecast on television using dials, chalkboards, and magnetic boards.

But then, computers changed everything.

Our Triton weather system went online in the late eighties, bringing us the ability to display weather maps in near real-time and track storms using Pinpoint Doppler 3 radar.

Today, our arsenal of forecasting tools includes live doppler radar and Futurecast --- we can actually show you what the weather will likely be hours ahead of time.

In the years to come, you can count on WSAZ to use the latest technology to bring you the most accurate weather information to keep you ahead of the storm.
