Founded in 1924 as a small refinery on the banks of the Big Sandy, Ashland Oil, later Ashland Incorporated, grew to a Fortune 500 company with its corporate headquarters in the Ashland area.
That began to change in 1997 with an agreement to merge with Marathon, forming Marathon Ashland Petroleum -- and the decision to move the company's corporate headquarters from Russell, Kentucky to Covington.
The move meant hundreds of job losses to the area through transfers and attrition.
