60 Moments: 2003 Ice Storm

They sounded like gun shots in the woods during hunting season. So it was after a two-day ice storm left tens of thousands without power in much of the region February of 2003.

“I was going to breakfast and it sounded like the world's biggest bowl of Rice Krispies,” said one man affected by the storm. “It was going off all around you.”

In Gallipolis, Sunday travelers had to chisel their way to freedom, some opting to break the ice from the inside out.

City Park was littered with debris.

It was the same situation in the Bluegrass State, where in Greenup, it took bulldozers and chain saws to restore order.

“You fear for your life, but you stay,” said one woman.

This the worst ice storm in 100 years and it occurred President's Day weekend in 2003.
