From roads to buildings to high schools, West Virginians have honored United States Senator Robert Byrd in many way through the years.
But there is one honor that Byrd openly calls "the greatest he's ever received."
It was May 2001 when the West Virginia Legislature celebrated Senator Byrd's service to the state by naming him the West Virginian of the century.
"I am grateful to the people for giving me the opportunity to serve our state and nation, to stand in the midst of history," Byrd said.
To put the senator's service in perspective. WSAZ went on the air in 1949 -- two years AFTER Senator Byrd started his political career.
