60 Moments: The Mothman

A half-man, half-moth creature with glowing red-eyes the size of hubcaps has offered up many a good tale in Point Pleasant for 43 years. It’s the legend of Mothman.

Four teens driving near an abandoned munitions plant are said to be the first to encounter the seven-foot tall bird-like creature.

This mythical red-eyed beast even got Hollywood’s attention. In 2002, Richard Gere and Debra Messing starred in the film, “Mothman Prophecies.”

Many believe Mothman has been responsible for everything from power outages, to psychic visions, to the 1967 Silver Bridge disaster.

Today, the legend of Mothman lives on during the Mothman Festival every fall.

And those who can’t wait that long, there’s always the Mothman museum.
