"…and the constitution of the state of Ohio. So help me God."

With those words, Ted Strickland became the first governor from southern Ohio in nearly half a century.

Strickland, a Democrat from Duck Run in Scioto County, made education reform a cornerstone of his campaign -- a theme echoed in his inaugural address.

"Education is to the state as national defense is to the survival of the nation," said Strickland.

Governor Strickland introduced a massive reorganization plan for Ohio schools this year, tackling everything from performance expectations to inequalities in school funding.
