In 1964, William C. Campbell won the USGA Amateur, signifying the best amateur golfer in the United States.
He had professional golfer talent, but he would forever remain an amateur because his love for the game.
He played in 18 Masters championships and 15 U.S. Opens.
In 2004, another golfing compliment: he was honored at Jack Nicklaus' memorial tournament.
"When they presented me with this decision that they made, I was speechless. Jack said it was the first time he had ever seen me speechless. But on the other hand, I recovered enough to accept it before they changed their minds," said Campbell.
