60 Moments: Leftwich Leads Herd to Bowl Victory

December 18, 2001... did you see that game? It was Marshall and East Carolina in the GMAC Bowl.

The Pirates rolled out to a 38 to 8 lead at half-time. The Herd used two second half defensive touchdowns -- one by Ralph Street, the other by Terrence Tarpley -- to get back into it.

Then, they rode Byron Leftwich's considerable right arm to a stunning 64 to 61 double overtime victory. Leftwich threw for 576 yards -- the greatest comeback in bowl game history.

"When I watched college football on TV, I always dreamed of being on TV and the big game, the bowl game. I never knew if it would be reality or not, so I'm just out living the dream right now," said Leftwich.

The legend of Leftwich, indelibly etched in the history of Marshall football because of that miracle in Mobile.
