Where Are They Now: Jule Huffman

Jule Huffman, AKA Mr. Cartoon, worked at WSAZ for more than forty years. He joined the television station as a singer and announcer in the days in which WSAZ produced many entertainment programs. He also was the station’s morning weatherman for years. Most people know Jule though for his alter ego Mr. Cartoon. In 1969, Jule took over the role of Mr. Cartoon and performed in this role of afternoon cartoon program host until 1995. He retired that year, but still remains one of the most popular television personalities in our region.

Jule says:
“I really did love my time when I was working at WSAZ. But I want you all to know out there, all the children who were on the show with me, I love you most of all. You made my life something special. God bless you all. Thank you.”

i remember the day you retired-May 1995. I was getting ready for school when my friend called & told my parents it was your last day,I better watch it because they knew how big of a fan I was. I already had the VCR set to tape your last weather forecast at noon. I watched until it was time to leave for school. I remember people saying that whatever Jule says the weather will do is what it will do. And they said that even though tony was a meteoroligist that Jule's forecasts were more accurate and that you probably knew more than the professors that taught tony! I mean no disrespect against Tony but the people in this tv market would buy a ocean front property in arizona from you! My family used to vacation at the Greenbrier and I remember talking with our babysitter who said that she used to live in Huntington and I told her that you were still on the air(in 1991) and she said that she remembered you from 30 plus years back and was glad to hear you were still on the air. A Legend.

Mr. Cartoon made an impression on me during a visit when he ask my friend if she ever took her children swimming. Then he ask her if she could not swim. When she replied no, he then ask how would she save her child if they were drowning? The gave me a lot to think about. I think of that often and use that example to my children when they take my grandchildren fishing.
