Central Hardware & Furniture Inc. to acquire S.S. Kresge Building
IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) - Central Hardware & Furniture Inc. has purchased the historic S.S. Kresge building in downtown Ironton.
Central Hardware & Furniture Inc. bought it from the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation on June 22. This is a new location for Central Hardware Furniture to serve customers.
President of Central Hardware & Furniture Rich Donohue says, “this is an exciting time for us, with the addition of the S.S. Kresge building, it allows us to have our retail store on the first floor for the first time in the history of the company. The addition will give us roughly 12,000 square feet of retail space for furniture and 10,500 square feet of retail space for hardware.”
Rich and Lori Donohue bought Central Hardware & Furniture in 2016 from Roy Ratliff who owned the business with his father since 1950.
In 2019, Central added 4,500 square feet by including the old Meran’s building on 2nd Street.
“Central Hardware” will remain at the current Central location, while “Central Furniture” will be moved to the S.S. Kresge Building.
Officials says this will not affect the structure of the company. It will differentiate retail categories within Central Hardware & Furniture.
Vice President of Central Hardware & Furniture says “this move sets us up for the future. This allows us to expand both hardware and furniture divisions of the company, while branding it in such a way that will allow for future expansion in other locations down the road.”
They plan to open doors to the public in mid-July at the new location at 101 South 3rd Street in Ironton.
