UPDATE 4/12/21 @ 6:14 p.m.

LINCOLN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - West Virginia State Police say a man who had stripped down to nothing tried to break down someone’s door Monday morning.

The man came face-to-face with the homeowner who was armed with a gun and ready to defend his house.

As most people are in bed at two o’clock in the morning, troopers in Lincoln County say it was 2 a.m. Monday and Jeffery Roberts II, 28, was wide awake, naked and breaking into someone’s home.

Neighbors like Bruce Tulley are still stunned.

“Yeah, I’m shocked. I don’t know why he would have been at his door pounding on his door at 2 a.m.,” Tulley said.

Roberts picked the wrong house along Bulger Road in Alkol. Troopers said the homeowner, who’s in his 60s, grabbed his gun and opened fire, hitting the naked suspect in the shoulder as he tried to break down the door.

Tulley said he is familiar with both Roberts and the homeowner.

“I am aware of him, you know, the victim. The victim, they seem to be very good people,” Tulley said.

Tulley said he doesn’t know why Roberts would do this.

“It’s not something where it is a crime-infested area,” he said.

Roberts was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. Troopers said no charges will be brought against the homeowner and, so far, no charges have been filed against Roberts.

State Police are still asking questions and investigating the wild wake-up call that has the whole neighborhood talking and on high alert.

“I was a little shocked that it happened. Those are things that don’t happen,” Tulley said.

This is a developing story. Keep checking for any possible charges filed in this case.
