UPDATE 10/18/21 @ 6 p.m.

LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- New information has been released on a deadly shooting in Logan County, West Virginia.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office tells WSAZ a call came in around 11:30 a.m. Monday of shots fired at a home on Brogue Road in the Mud Fork/Dingess Mountain area.

When deputies arrived to the area, they found Shawn and Karen Dempsey, 52, dead from gunshot wounds.

Deputies say witnesses at the scene were able to give them information about the suspect.

According to deputies, the couple’s son, Shawn Dempsey, 32, was the suspect in the shooting. Deputies say after the shooting, he stole the couple’s car and then took off from the home.

Deputies say there was an argument between Dempsey and his parents before the shooting.

Several agencies, including the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Mingo County Sheriff’s Office, the Mingo and Wayne detachments for West Virginia State Police and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, began to search for Dempsey.

Deputies say Dempsey took off toward the Mingo/Wayne County line. Eventually, investigators were able to track him down and troopers pursued him to Cub Branch where a roadblock was set up.

According to deputies, he drove through the roadblock, damaging a Logan County cruiser. He then drove toward an area off Twelvepole in Mingo County, where deputies say the car got stuck.

Investigators say Dempsey shot at officers, who returned fire, killing him.

George Baisden lives close to where the chase ended and heard the gunshots. He also knew the Dempseys.

“They were really good people,” Baisden said. “If you needed anything, all you had to do was ask. That’s why it’s so hard for me to understand why he did something like that.”

Baisden says he’s relieved nobody else was hurt in the crossfire.

“I don’t think it could’ve ended any other way,” he said. “I don’t want to see anyone get killed, but killing your parents, how could you live with that?”
