Extensive damage throughout the city of Hindman following flooding

HINDMAN, Ky. (WYMT) - The Mayor of Hindman, Tracy Neice, said the flooding that hit Eastern Kentucky Wednesday night and Thursday morning is some of the worst he has ever seen.

Throughout the city, there are several major water line breaks and reports of a gas line break.

“I’m 56 years old, and I’ve lived here all my life, and its never been this type of water come.” Said Mayor Neice.

The Mayor also said there are several people unaccounted for and multiple homes destroyed. There are also many cars underwater and rescues are underway.

“I am the director of troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Company, the head instructor of a school and the curator of a museum that have all been wiped out.” Said Douglas Naselroad.

Downtown Hindman was severely impacted by the storms, levelling the interiors of the Appalachian Artisan Center’s museum and studio, as well as several other businesses.

Water levels reached high into the first floor of almost all of main downtowns buildings.

Officials with the Appalachian Artisan Center says they suspect they have suffered over one million dollars in damage to their properties.

“You know this isn’t just a manufacturing facility, this is a dream, that worked for a lot of people, a lot of people in recovery have fixed their hopes going forward employed with this very prestigious brand that we have been making, but troublesome creek just wanted to put the brakes on us.” Said Naselroad.

The new Hindman pool is severely damaged, as is the skatepark, according to the Mayor.

There are also major power outages and the city’s lot of vehicles and generators was submerged, destroying a lot of the city’s key machinery.
