One dead in residential fire in Floyd County
FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) - A fatal residential structure fire occurred in the Hueysville area of FLoyd County Monday night.
About 6:30 p.m., emergency personnel were sent to the fire at 1 Railroad Station Rd., police said.
Floyd County deputies were also sent to the fire due to suspicions of the structure being occupied at the time of the fire, the Floyd County Sheriff said.
Police said Marvin Howard, 75, died at the scene and was a single occupant of the home.
No foul play is suspected and an investigation is ongoing, according to police.
Ruth Howard was Marvin’s sister-in-law and lived next door to him.
“It’s shock,” she said. “It’s unbelievable.”
She says he was the type of person who’d do anything to help someone in need.
“Whatever he could do for you, he’d do it,” Ruth said.
She says after she and her family members members realized the home was burning, they rushed over to try to help, but it was too late.
“By the time we got our water hose and everything, the flames were already shooting through the door so bad we couldn’t get in,” Ruth said. “We tried the back door, and there was just black smoke billowing out so bad, it was just impossible. We couldn’t get to him.”
Members of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Floyd County Coroner’s Office, and the Garrett Volunteer Fire Department are helping with the investigation.
