HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - On this date in 1970, the plane carrying the Marshall University football team, coaches, and supporters crashed while trying to land at the Huntington Tri-State Airport.

All 75 people on board were killed.

It is the deadliest sports tragedy in the nation’s history.

It nearly ended the football program at Marshall and did end up bringing safety improvements to the airport.

It also was the foundation of the “We Are Marshall” movie starring Matthew McConaughey.
