Tuesday morning’s wintry mix led to slick spots on roadways as mainly freezing rain and sleet fell, though there was some snow in northern parts of the region. Another quick-hitting system moves through tonight, bringing mostly snow to locations along and south of the Ohio River. Light sleet or freezing rain may mix in, particularly across the southern coalfields. Wednesday will be a nicer day as clouds break for a bit of sunshine, though the chill remains. One final system tries to skim by to the south on Thursday, then several dry days are in store as temperatures moderate.

Even though sunshine dominated on Sunday, temperatures definitely remained on the chilly side. A continued clear sky supports another cold night and start to the day on Monday. Then, clouds increase throughout the day, though showers hold off until after dark. On the heels of the first push of rain Monday night into Tuesday morning, another arrives late Wednesday and lasts into Thursday. While cooler air follows the rain, accumulating snow still does not look likely for at least the next seven days.

Temperatures were almost deceivingly warm on Monday as the mostly cloudy sky made it look cooler than it actually was. Believe it or not, Tuesday will be even warmer as gusty southerly winds usher in springlike air. However, springy showers and even a few storms are in the forecast as well. These showers will last through Wednesday before departing behind a cold front. Chillier air then returns for the rest of forecast period, including the weekend and start of next week.

Another near 60-degree afternoon was recorded for the first day of the new year despite the persistent cloud cover. Three more days with afternoon temperatures in the 60s can be expected as morning lows stay well above freezing as well. Then, chillier but more seasonable air takes hold from Thursday into the upcoming weekend. While there is a chance for sprinkles or scattered light showers on Monday, more substantial rain is forecast to move across the region Tuesday into Wednesday. This will be followed by scattered rain and snow showers on Thursday and lingering flurries Thursday night into Friday morning. The upcoming weekend looks dry at this point, though weak systems lurking nearby may change that as the forecast period draws closer.

Cloud cover finally showed signs of breaking towards sunset Sunday evening after a rather dim day with flurries flying as well. The clear sky and lighter wind means that temperatures will get quite cold Sunday night, falling to near 20 degrees, if not the teens in rural spots. Monday through Wednesday are still looking dry and good for travel in and out of the region. By Thursday, rain showers enter the picture as a powerful storm system approaches. Rain then changes to snow Thursday night into Friday morning as temperatures plummet. Occasional snow showers and bitterly cold temperatures stick around through Christmas Day. If that is not enough, strong winds are also expected and will make temperatures feel much colder than they actually are.

November started rather dull across the region as low clouds hung around much of the day. These clouds have broken away Tuesday evening, but a new round of thick mid and high clouds is already increasing and will stick around for Wednesday. So, it is one more day of “dim and dull” before sunshine takes over and warmth surges into the upcoming weekend. A cold front tries to pass late Saturday into the Sunday with the potential for a few showers, but it does not fully cross and lifts back north and west for the start of next week, keeping unseasonably warm temperatures in the forecast.

The much-advertised cold blast is here. Tuesday afternoon’s temperatures were the coldest ever for October 18 (46 degrees in Huntington, 44 degrees in Charleston) due to thick cloud cover, a gusty westerly wind, and occasional showers or sprinkles. The wintry feel persists Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, where flurries may fly across northern parts of the region and light snow will accumulate in the mountains. On Wednesday, the sky begins clearing from west to east during the afternoon, but it is this clearer sky that sets the stage for a widespread frost and freeze Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Therefore, it really is not until Thursday afternoon and especially Friday when the warming trend begins and temperatures pick up where they left off this past weekend.

A blast of early-season “arctic” air has invaded the region, keeping temperatures in the 50s Monday afternoon. Temperatures drop to the 30s Monday night as a few locations possibly flirt with freezing, though an increase in cloud cover and light breeze should prevent widespread freezing temperatures. Nonetheless, 30s are plenty cold enough, and Tuesday afternoon’s temperatures will not get out of the 40s as a whirlpool of cold air spins over the Great Lakes, sending clouds and a few light showers/sprinkles down this way. It is also not out of the question to see a few snowflakes fly, mainly near and in the mountains, where Tuesday night into Wednesday morning a fresh light accumulation of snow is likely at ski country, just a week after peak foliage. Fortunately, the chill is replaced by much warmer temperatures that climb steadily from Friday into the weekend.
