Andy joined the WSAZ NewsChannel 3 First Warning Weather Team in November 2017. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Meteorology with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Oklahoma. A native of Dallas, Texas, Andy is thrilled to come to West Virginia for the first time to seek new adventures and forecast the dynamic Tri-State weather.
Prior to his position at WSAZ, Andy was the Meteorologist at KREX in Grand Junction, CO for two years where he put his skills to the test in forecasting the ever-changing Rocky Mountain weather. Before that, he had internships at Time Warner Cable News in Austin, TX and KOCO in Oklahoma City and briefly served as the temporary Meteorologist at KVII in Amarillo, TX.
Andy is a big college football fan and will especially follow the Oklahoma Sooners every weekend in the fall. When not at work, he looks forward to exploring all the outdoor activities the Tri-State area has to offer, especially hiking.

Saturday’s temperatures maxed out at 89 degrees in Huntington and 90 degrees in Charleston, marking the hottest day of the year so far in Charleston and second in Huntington. Temperatures will not be as hot for the week ahead thanks to a couple cold fronts that will slide through. However, after scattered showers and storms fade Saturday night, another extended dry stretch looks to set up through at least the start of next weekend.

Temperatures have been rising all week long and will hit their maximum point on Saturday as highs reach the 90-degree mark. A cold front sliding through Saturday afternoon sparks scattered showers and thunderstorms. Behind this front, temperatures do not look quite as hot for next week, with even cooler air by week’s end as another front moves across.

Saturday’s weather was decent enough to kickstart the Memorial Day Weekend. However, a period of unsettled weather is expected on Sunday as a coastal low pressure system that has been pounding the Carolinas with heavy rain and wind moves onshore. While scattered showers linger on Memorial Day, there looks to be enough dry time for activities like the Ironton parade. Tuesday continues to see the chance for scattered showers before a dry and hot stretch takes over into the first few days of June.

The “unofficial” start to summer is here, although it may not feel all that summery this holiday weekend. A low pressure system swirling off the southeast Atlantic Coast and bringing an absolute washout on Saturday to beachgoers in the Carolinas, including Myrtle Beach, will meander onshore and get close enough to impact the weather locally with clouds, occasional showers, and cooler temperatures by Sunday. Showers become more scattered on Memorial Day itself, so activities like the Ironton Parade should end up mostly dry. Then, as the remainder of the upcoming week stays dry, temperatures really begin to heat up into the first few days of June.

Saturday’s rains have exited the region as the cold front that brought them has pushed off to the east. This sets the stage for a drier and brighter finish to the weekend. The dry weather carries over into much of the week ahead as well as high pressure remains firmly in control and deflects any approaching weather systems. Perhaps by the start of the Memorial Day Weekend a few showers may creep back in, but chances are low at this time. Meanwhile, temperatures stay fairly seasonable through the next seven days.

The humidity has returned as rain moves back into the region. A passing cold front brings widespread showers on Saturday. Then, the air dries significantly on Sunday for a gorgeous finish to the weekend. Several dry days are in store for the week ahead, which is actually unusual since May is one of the wettest months of the year on average. After today, the next chance for rain may not come until at least Friday.

Despite occasional showers and storms, Saturday was far from a washout. Fortunately, Sunday is looking even drier as there is only a slim chance for a pop-up shower or two in the afternoon. Low rain chances continue Monday and Tuesday before a couple dry days during the middle of the week. Then, as the cycle continues, rain chances are renewed into the upcoming weekend.

A slow-moving frontal boundary draped across the region sparks scattered showers and storms on Saturday. The front moves far enough south on Mother’s Day such that most of the day stays dry outside of a stray pop-up shower. Then, one final push of rain comes Sunday night into Monday morning before a few dry days are in store for the week ahead.

After a couple perfect days for early May on Friday and Saturday, Sunday is not looking so nice as showers and storms target the region from the northwest. Monday and Tuesday are also looking at rain and storm chances as a “ring of fire” pattern sets up over the region. Quiet weather is expected Wednesday and Thursday as the ring shifts east of the area. Then, rain chances return from Friday into the upcoming weekend.

A strong cold front is set to cross on Sunday, bringing scattered showers, a gusty breeze, and eventually much cooler temperatures. The first few days of May will feel more like the first few days in March as a large storm system swirling over Canada brings clouds, showers, and chilly air into the region. Improvement does look to come by the upcoming weekend, however.

The showers and storms from Friday have long since exited the area, and Saturday is shaping up to be decent overall. Showers become more common towards the evening and especially overnight hours, then continue off-and-on from Sunday into the middle of the upcoming work week. In fact, it will be a dreary and unseasonably cool start to May as a storm system swirling over Canada brings clouds, showers, and chilly temperatures into the region. This pattern may be tough to break out of.

A cold front that swept through the region early Saturday morning and brought gusty showers and storms has been responsible for keeping temperatures much cooler than recently into Saturday afternoon. A second cold front crosses Saturday evening and brings a reinforcing shot of chilly air. High temperatures on Sunday and Monday will not get out of the 50s, and there is the potential for frost to form the next several mornings as well. In fact, there appears to be no break in the chilly pattern through at least the end of the month.

A cold front that crossed early Saturday morning brought gusty showers and storms in the pre-dawn hours. The good news is that the day will not be a washout as the steady rain exits for most locations before sunrise. However, much chillier air spills in to the region, especially as a second cold front crosses Saturday evening. And temperatures do not look to recover any time soon as an extended cool stretch sets up for the week ahead.

The isolated nature of Saturday’s rain meant some locations saw some while others did not see a drop. Sunday will be different as a passing cold front brings the opportunity for more widespread showers and storms. Though a few sprinkles or a couple light showers are possible in the morning, it is the afternoon that is the expected time for precipitation as this is when a cold front will cross. Temperatures plummet quickly behind this front and stay rather chilled on Monday. But, the warmth quickly returns by the end of the week before another cool-down comes for the weekend.

The dry stretch ended Friday as light showers in the morning became rowdy thunderstorms by evening. While showers remain in the forecast for the weekend, it is not a washout. Saturday will see isolated showers early in the morning and late in the afternoon with much of the day staying dry. Sunday’s rain and storm risk favors the afternoon hours as a cold front crosses. Temperatures remain warm this weekend as highs top out near 80 degrees both days, but the cold front brings a sharp chill-down on Monday. However, the warmth quickly returns by the end of next week.

A Springtime Feel Dabbles With Summer, But There Are A Few Showers To Track.

Two Saturdays, two windstorms. Another powerful low pressure system wreaked havoc across the region Saturday afternoon as wind gusts between 50 to 60 mph were common and caused widespread damage. The wind is expected to settle down Saturday night, with a much quieter and cooler Sunday on tap. Then, attention turns to yet another strong low pressure system in the Tuesday-Wednesday time frame. While this has the potential to produce another widespread outbreak of severe weather in the middle part of the country, the low looks to stay far enough north of the immediate area to keep any significant severe weather away and allow winds to be a bit tamer locally. Either way, a surge of warmth with showers and storms is likely for the middle of the week before a cooler and quieter pattern takes hold into the start of Easter weekend.

A powerful springtime storm system that has been sweeping across the country and producing widespread severe weather will be impacting the region today. An early-morning squall line brought brief strong wind gusts and heavy rain. As this exits, attention shifts to a high wind risk from late-morning into a majority of the afternoon. The wind looks to be as strong, if not a bit stronger, than it was last Saturday which presents the risk for power outages, downed trees and/or tree limbs, and even structural damage. Once the wind settles down Saturday night, a much quieter and cooler Sunday is on tap. Then, a temperature whiplash takes shape next week as temperatures soar to near 80 degrees for the middle of the week only to fall back to the 50s by week’s end.

The second windstorm this month swept through the region with great fury. Occasional gusts of 50 to 60 mph brought down trees and power lines, thus knocking out power to thousands. The system responsible for these strong winds exits Saturday night, with much calmer weather in its wake on Sunday. In fact, Sunday’s weather is about as nice as it can get for late March. The week ahead stays relatively tame through Thursday, but showers and storms return to the forecast Friday and Saturday.

The sky quickly clears into Saturday afternoon as temperatures rise to the 70s. It seems like it would be a nice day, but strong winds will be a big concern. With sustained speeds between 15 and 25 mph and occasional gusts up to 50 mph, trees/tree limbs could come down, and scattered power outages are likely.

As if one cold front on Friday was not enough, another one swept through Saturday afternoon. The “arctic” nature of this second cold front meant that occasional flurries were flying in addition to the increased clouds and gusty breeze. It will also be responsible for keeping the region in a deep chill on Sunday and leading to a trio of very cold nights starting Saturday night. Temperatures finally begin to moderate Tuesday afternoon and will be significantly warmer Thursday and Friday, albeit with the chance for showers.

The showers from St. Patrick’s Day have exited the area, but chillier air has been left in their wake. Another cold front crossing on Saturday will keep the wintry feel lingering all weekend - how appropriate for the final one in winter. Spring officially begins at 5:24 PM on Monday. While the season starts cool, warmer air is in store by the end of next week with showers sneaking back in as well.

For much of this winter, the trend was for generally mild weather with occasional but brief chill-downs. Now in March, the reverse appears to be true. Much of the week ahead will be characterized by afternoon temperatures coming up 10 to 20 degrees below average. A few very cold mornings are also on tap and will once again challenge any premature blooms. In addition to the chill will be an overall dull look and feel, with several chances for showers and only a couple days of decent sunshine.

Even though it’s “spring forward” in regard to the time change this weekend, the weather will be “falling back” into a wintry look and feel. The unseasonably chill carries over into the start of the work week as well before a brief warming trend takes hold into St. Patrick’s Day on Friday.

Morning clouds gave way to plenty of sunshine Saturday afternoon, a well-deserved reward from getting through the active weather of Friday and Friday night. Quiet weather remains in store on Sunday and Monday as temperatures steadily warm. Then, a string of much cooler days is on tap for the rest of the week ahead. Outside of a couple light showers early Tuesday, dry weather is the norm until Friday and Saturday when widespread showers return to the forecast.

A windswept night was certainly felt across the region as winds gusting 50 to 60 mph area-wide brought down trees and caused numerous power outages. Fortunately, the wind relaxes on Saturday and remains fairly light on Sunday to allow crews to begin the restoration process. After clouds and patchy drizzle to start, sunshine returns Saturday afternoon, and plenty of sunshine will be seen on Sunday. Meanwhile, temperatures climb steadily through Monday as they return to the 70s. But this time, the warm spell will be short-lived as much cooler air arrives on Tuesday and looks to stick around through the upcoming weekend.

Following the morning showers, Saturday afternoon turned into a divided weather experience, with locations along and north of I-64 able to clear out for sunshine while locations south of I-64 remained in a drizzly, low overcast. It will take some time for those low clouds to clear out across southern zones, but most areas should at least see partial sunshine on Sunday for a nice finish to the weekend. Springtime showers and even a few storms push through on Monday with warmer temperatures and gusty winds. Then, a couple quiet days can be expected before a damp finish to the week.

From warm and windy conditions with brush fires on Wednesday, to heavy rain and flooding on Thursday, and much colder temperatures with snow flurries flying on Friday, the past few days have been quite the weather whiplash. Fortunately, the weekend will be significantly quieter with a good deal of sunshine both days. This will allow floodwaters to recede. More rain chances are in the forecast for next week, but new flooding looks unlikely at this time. However, for the third week in a row, there will be a day in which temperatures soar into the 70s during the afternoon.

High cloud cover that moved in Saturday afternoon and made for a gorgeous sunset Saturday evening was the result of a southern storm approaching the region. However, this storm system will only get close enough to bring precipitation to parts of the region, namely, southeastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia. Due to temperatures being a few degrees too “warm,” precipitation is expected to fall as mainly rain, though some melting wet snow or sleet could mix in for the lower elevations. Once the system exits Sunday evening, sunshine comes back out for a few days, and temperatures soar to springlike levels for much of the week ahead before crashing back down on Friday. The abrupt transition from “spring” to “winter” will be accompanied by showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms as well.

Saturday morning felt a lot more like mid-February as temperatures dropped to the 20s under a clearing sky. The afternoon will be seasonable and pleasant overall with a light wind. On Sunday, a southern storm brushes the region with the opportunity for mainly rain and perhaps some melting wet snow across southeastern Kentucky and southern/eastern West Virginia. Then, temperatures soar to springlike levels for much of the week ahead before crashing back down on Friday.

For the first time in five days, Saturday afternoon’s temperatures finally rose up out of the 30s, even despite a rather crisp start to the day. Further moderation comes for the week ahead as springlike air takes over for most of it. In addition to the warmth will be springy showers at times, but plenty of dry weather can be expected as well. At this point, the next chill-down with perhaps a shot at some flakes to fly is heading into the start of next weekend.

For most locations, Saturday morning is the coldest it has been since the arctic blast over Christmas. But, even so, today’s low temperatures are nowhere near what those were in late December, and fortunately the wind is relatively light this time around. It is just a sign that there has not been much cold air this winter season. As the arctic air exits and the wind shifts back to the southwest Saturday afternoon, temperatures moderate to seasonable levels in the mid 40s. Further moderation comes Sunday and through the week ahead when a springy feel will be in the air. This also comes with the chance for rain showers, but no snow is in sight.

Rain showers push in overnight, and a widespread steady rain is on tap for Sunday morning. Fortunately, no wintry precipitation is expected as temperatures stay well above freezing. While the steady rain exits Sunday afternoon, patchy drizzle will be left behind, along with a chilly, breezy overcast. For the week ahead, several systems look to pass close by, though the region is right on the northern edge of most of this precipitation.

More sunshine will be seen for the start of the weekend with comfortable temperatures, but then a chilly rain moves in on Sunday. However, no wintry precipitation is expected. Clouds took their sweet time clearing away Saturday afternoon, but most locations were still able to get in on a little sunshine. However, as the low clouds eroded, a new wave of mid and high cloud cover was already increasing from the southwest ahead of the next weather system. This will bring mostly rain, though a brief wintry mix of precipitation is possible at the onset, followed by some light snow to finish. Another system bringing a similar precipitation pattern looks to move through during the Wednesday-Friday time frame. So, while there are chances for snow in the forecast, amounts still do not look to be that impressive.

After the cold start, Saturday turned into a pretty nice day with a good deal of sunshine and slightly above-average temperatures. However, the nice weather comes to an end on Sunday as a low pressure system moving directly over the area brings rain showers and even the opportunity for a bit of wintry precipitation. Once this departs, much of the week ahead stays dry until the next system arrives by late Thursday. Yet again, rain looks to be the dominant form of precipitation, though a bit of snow is possible at the end.

Friday was a reminder that it is in fact early January as temperatures were stuck in the 40s for the afternoon. Saturday morning further solidified that fact as temperatures dropped to the 20s. The weekend ahead looks to be “seasonably chilly” as Saturday stays dry with sunshine while Sunday turns cloudy and damp. Then, much of next week looks dry and still seasonable before milder but damper weather arrives by the end of the week.
