UPDATE | Name released of teen who drowned at Cave Run Lake

ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) -- UPDATE 7/5/19 @ 4:31 p.m.
The Rowan County Coroner has identified the young man who drowned at Cave Run Lake.

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened at the Twin Knobs Campground off of state Route 801. A man was swimming at the beach when he went underwater.

Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt says the 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital. The victim's name is Luis Avendano of Mexico. He moved to Frankfort one month ago to live with extended family and just started working.

Emergency crews responded to Cave Run Lake in Rowan County Thursday afternoon after receiving a call of someone going underwater.

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office says it happened at the Twin Knobs Campground off of Ky. 801. Avendano was swimming at the beach when he went underwater.

The teenager died on his 19th birthday. His family in Mexico was notified.

A witness tells WKYT that crews were performing CPR on Avendano after he was pulled from the water. The witness says several minutes passed from the time he went underwater to the time he was pulled from the lake.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife confirms the man drowned. He was 19 years old.

The victim's name has not been released at this time.
