KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A $5000 reward is being offered after a cat was found shot and two broken legs.

According to a press release from PETA, a Pinch resident found an orange one-year-old cat under his deck and took the animal to an emergency veterinary clinic.

The cat underwent surgery and is in recovery.

Veterinarians believe the cat’s injuries are because of deliberate cruelty, according to PETA and now they are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

PETA is also encouraging everyone to keep animals inside for their safety.

"It takes a dangerous lack of empathy to shoot a cat more than 20 times, break his legs and then leave him to suffer in excruciating pain," said PETA Senior Director Colleen O'Brien. "PETA is urging anyone with information about this case to come forward immediately before anyone else gets hurt."

Anyone with information about the case can reach the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office at (304) 357-0169.
