KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man is facing charges for an attempted robbery of a bank, which he says was all meant as a joke.

Saint Albans Police responded to a hold up alarm at the Sun Trust Bank, inside the Kroger on the 1400 block of MacCorkle Avenue, just before 1:00 Saturday afternoon.

According to investigators, the suspect, Chester Wayne Cyrus, Jr., 43, approached the teller and demanded $10,000 be placed in a bag. The suspect presented the teller with a photo ID with his name on it, in an attempt to cash a check on his account. He left the bank after cashing the check.

Police were able to get in contact with the suspect’s daughter, who said they had just been at the bank, and agreed to bring her father back.

Cyrus was taken into custody. Police say he admitted to demanding the money, but he meant it as a joke.

Cyrus was booked in the South Central Regional Jail, charged with attempted robbery.
