FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 6/17/19 @ 10 p.m.
A mother is mourning the loss of her 12-year-old son who was hit by a truck while he was on his dirt bike.

Dylan Mullins, 12, died Saturday in a dirt bike crash on state Route 979 in the Dry Branch area of Little Mud Creek. That's in Floyd County, Kentucky.

Dylan Mullins was killed Saturday night in front of his house in the Little Mud Creek area of Floyd County.

The boy's mother is hoping sharing her regret might prevent other parents from experiencing the same grief.

"It's just unreal," Shauna Mullins said. "I feel like I'm in a bad dream."

Mullins says around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dylan was coming home on his dirt bike from a friend's house.

She says he was turning left on Route 979 into his driveway, when he was hit by a truck coming from the opposite direction.

"I went running outside, and he was laying in the road," she said. "I knew the second I saw him there that he was gone."

She says Dylan, who just finished 6th grade at Betsy Layne Elementary, loved the outdoors and had already started earning his own money mowing neighbors' lawns. She says he'd talked about wanting to become a firefighter when he grew up.

"He was my baby, and I don't know what I'm going to do now," Mullins said.

Mullins says cars go way too fast on that road, especially on the straight stretch in front of her house.

"If you see a child or anybody on a dirt bike, a 4-wheeler, anything, please slow down," she said.

Dylan's mom says she got him the motor bike as an early birthday gift in April. Since the accident, she says she's had regrets about getting him the bike to begin with and more regrets about letting him use it on a road like that.

"It turned out I actually bought him something that cost him his life," she said. "I just want everybody to know kids don't need to be on them, especially not on these roads. I just wish I could go back and change it."

The mother says Dylan's funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the River of Life Church in Grethel.

WSAZ is told no charges are pending against the driver at this time.
