UPDATE | Man sentenced in deadly Charleston shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 5/14/19 @ 4:55 p.m.
A man was sentenced Tuesday to the maximum 15 years in prison for a deadly shooting in Charleston.

Joseph Barker had pleaded guilty in the death of Kenneth "Donnie" Bays. The shooting happened August 2018 along Chandler Drive in Charleston, West Virginia.

Investigators say Bays died at the scene after he was shot in the head. They say both men got into a fight at a home in the 1600 block of Chandler Drive where Bays was shot in the yard.

According to investigators, both men knew one another prior to the fight.

Barker has been in custody in the South Central Regional Jail.



UPDATE 8/3/18 @ 7:18 a.m.
Charleston Police have released the name of the victim and suspect in a shooting death from Thursday night.

Kenneth "Donnie" Bays of Charleston died in the shooting on Chandler Drive just before 9 Thursday night.

Joseph Wayne Barker has been charged with first-degree murder. Barker and Bays knew each other and had an altercation prior to the shooting.

Barker is in South Central Regional Jail.

We are continuing to get updates from our crews on the scene of deadly shooting late Thursday night in Charleston.

According to Charleston Police, the victim and the suspected shooter knew one another, and the victim was shot in the head.

The shooting took place in the yard of a home in the 1600 block of Chandler Drive. That is on the city's West Side.

Chandler Drive remains closed in that area.

Police say there's no other threat to neighbors, some who tell our crew that they're concerned about such a deadly incident happening so close to home.

One person is dead and another is in custody Thursday night after the shooting along Chandler Drive on the city's West Side, Metro 911 dispatchers say.

It happened just before 9 p.m.

Charleston Police are on the scene. We also have a crew there.

Our crew reports there was a body lying in a yard. Metro 911 dispatchers say police believe the incident stemmed from a domestic issue.

Shots were fired Thursday night at a house along Chandler Drive, Metro 911 dispatchers say.

It was reported just before 9 p.m. Thursday.

They say police on scene believe the incident could have started as a domestic incident at the home.

Officers with the Charleston Police Department are on the scene. The roadway is closed in that area.
