UPDATE 9/17/18 @ 6:06 p.m.

Crews began demolishing Herbert Hoover High School early Monday morning.

Construction crews say the demolition process will take two to three days, and then the cleanup will take four to six weeks.

Many community members went to the high school Monday to see the building before the demolition started. Connie Nelson graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1973. She said Monday felt like a funeral.

"We knew the day was coming, but we were still holding out hope that maybe we could save it," Nelson said. "But today just brings home the fact that we are not going to be able to save it."

Asbestos was a part of the normal tear-down process. It was factored into the demolition plan and took longer than expected. But everything was cleared before crews started on Monday.

A spokesperson for Kanawha County Schools tells WSAZ a new high school will be built on the Given’s Fork (church) property. The purchasing process has begun but is not completed.

As a part of the land surveys and to comply with state and federal requirements, many studies have been done on potential land. This includes studies on any relevant endangered species.

In this case, a bat study has to be done and it can only be done during a certain time of year. Officials did not find any endangered bats on the Given's Fork property. The study did delay the process, but school officials say it has not affected the opening time frame, which is 2021.
