UPDATE | Man faces first-degree murder charge in wife's shooting death

A man faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with a shooting last summer that left his wife dead, Putnam County court records show.

Investigators say Thomas Newton Blevins, 68, of Leon, shot his wife Aug. 4 at their home in the 400 block of Sulug Road in Putnam County, West Virginia.

Kim Blevins, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene by Putnam County EMS. Rescue crews found her lying on a couch with a gunshot wound.

According to the criminal complaint, Thomas Blevins then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the stomach area. He was found in a bedroom at the home and then taken to the hospital.

A family member told investigators he heard his parents arguing and overheard Thomas Blevins say, "I shot her. Call 911."

When investigators arrived at the scene, they say Thomas Blevins had a 12-gauge shotgun in his hand.

The suspect has been under medical care since the shooting. He was arrested Wednesday and arraigned later that afternoon.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department released the names of the victim and suspect in an attempted murder-suicide case.

It happened just before 7 a.m. Sunday on Sulug Road in the Liberty area.

Deputies say Kim Blevins, 47, was the victim. The suspect is her husband, Newton Blevins, 68. Both are from Liberty, West Virginia.

Investigators say Newton shot and killed his wife, then turned the gun on himself. However, he is still alive and in serious condition.

No other details about the case have been released.

Deputies are investigating a homicide in Putnam County Sunday morning.
