UPDATE 6/7/17 @ 8:55 p.m.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The name of an elderly woman who allegedly shot her boyfriend in the chest Wednesday afternoon, as well as the victim's name, have been released.

Betty Jean Pardue, 79, of Huntington, is charged with malicious wounding, according to Cabell County court records.

The incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. inside a home in the 3000 block of Washington Boulevard. Thomas Epperly, the victim, was found outside the home when police arrived.

Huntington Police Chief Joe Ciccarelli said Epperly was taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital in serious condition. He was talking with police when they arrived. Police say Epperly had been shot with a handgun.

According to Ciccarelli, the shooting happened after an argument. Officers believe alcohol was involved.

"This is unusual, but when you have firearms mixed with alcohol and a volatile domestic situation, this is how it could end up regardless of age," Ciccarelli said.

Neighbors say they never saw anything that led him to believe this was possible.

"They were always nice to us," neighbor Babs Shaffer said. "Every morning they'd wave at me, very nice people. It just seems weird for either one of them. I'm very stunned. I would have never thought of it at all, not with her."

The chief says it's too early to say whether this may have been a case of self defense.
