SCOTT DEPOT, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- While so many people rush to the store to buy food for the holidays, it's important to remember not everyone is that fortunate.

One fifth grade student took it upon herself to help ensure those students have food for the holidays.

Elise Simokat is a student at West Teays Elementary school in Putnam County.

On Wednesday, she distributed family entrees at schools all across Putnam County.

She raised $1,800 to help ensure that students who already take part in the BackPack Buddies Food Program have food for Christmas break.

"It made me feel really happy about how, what this was going to do for the kids, and what was going to happen," Elise said.

Elise delivered food to 22 schools in Putnam County on Wednesday.

According to its website, "BackPack Buddies is designed to provide children from low-income households with 10 to 12 pounds of nutritious kid friendly groceries for the weekend when free school lunches and breakfasts are not provided."
