UPDATE 7/18/17 @ 10:05 p.m.

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Two toddlers are safe after crashing their mother's car Monday evening.

A 5-year-old boy drove the car for nearly 3 miles, with his 2-year-old brother along for the ride. Miraculously, both made it out without a scratch.

Investigators are still trying to figure out how it all happened, saying there are many more questions than answers.

“To be their age, I know my kids couldn't get in the car and make it that far,” said Sharlene Wiseman, who owns the Bronco Junction Apartments where the boys live.

Deputies say the boys drove 3 miles down country roads all alone. They eventually crashed on Grandview Ridge Road.

As a former teacher and a mom, Wiseman’s concerns come from a deeply personal place.

“I said six or seven years ago to the day we had lost our son in a motorcycle accident,” she said. “The pain that you go through with losing a child is forever. You never get over it.”

She shared her story with the children's mother on Monday.

“I have family that live here,” Wiseman said. “We have other tenants. Our children play out here. They're not expecting anything like a runaway car coming by.”

So as criminal charges are pending, Wiseman took action – telling the boy’s mother that she was no longer welcome there as a tenant.

“We didn't want to take that chance that something might happen again,” she said.

Although the toddlers escaped injury, Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese says he knows it could have been much worse, and deputies didn't find the boys’ mom until nearly an hour later.

Deweese said the mother thought the boys were in the front yard playing and had no clue they were missing.

While no charges have been filed against the mother at this time, Deweese tells us they’re working with both the prosecutor's office and Child Protective Services.

Investigators say the passenger in the car with the young boy was his 2-year-old brother.

The 3-mile drive that started on Bronco Junction Road ended when the 5-year-old crashed his mother's car into a ditch along Grandview Ridge Road just before 10:30 a.m..
