UPDATE 11/19/19 @ 10 p.m.

Parents were baffled when they learned a gun was found at one of the last places you'd want a gun to be left.

The principal at Poage Elementary in Ashland says around 11:30 a.m. during recess, a kindergartner saw a gun sticking out of some mulch on the playground.

That child told a teacher, and kids were sent off the playground back into the school, and they called Ashland police.

Police removed the gun, and they used metal detectors on the playground and around the school to make sure there were no other weapons.

"This could've gone a whole other way," Principal Katie Holbrook said. "We do a good job here at Poage about, if you see something and you're not sure what it is, don't touch it, alert an adult immediately. It's nice to see today that protocol was in place."

Parents say they wish whoever was responsible would've shown the courtesy of leaving the weapon just about anywhere else.

"There are several garbage cans and dumpsters in the area," mother Kristin Wilburn said. "Burying it in a playground where kids play is pretty low."

Police have not said if the gun was loaded.

On Sunday night, police responded to a shooting close to the school. That case is still being investigated. Police haven't said whether they believe the gun that was found on the playground may be connected to that case.

"The only thing that bothers me is the guy who buried it in the mulch is still out there," Wilburn said.

UPDATE 11/19/19 @ 1:40 p.m.

Ashland Police say no students came in direct contact with a gun that was found on the playground at Poage Elementary Tuesday.

Police say students were removed from the playground around 11:30 a.m. when the gun was found buried near play equipment.

All students and staff are safe.

It is unclear if the gun is connected to a shooting in that area Sunday night that officers are still investigating.

Investigators are checking the area with special equipment to ensure there are no other dangers on the property.
