UPDATE 11/29/17 @ 4:45 p.m.

A man’s body was found in an alley in the Highlawn neighborhood between Guyan and First avenues Wednesday morning. It was in the 2600 block, about a block from Highlawn Elementary School.

A neighbor driving home first spotted it around 8 a.m.

While police are not saying it’s drug-related, neighbors already have their suspicions.

Jerry Lowe owns several apartment buildings in the area, as well as near downtown. He was in the area Wednesday to pick up some rent checks.

"It's like everybody is walking around like zombies,” said Lowe. “It's like, what was I thinking then?"

The yellow crime scene tape around the alley Wednesday is at odds with the Christmas lights and decorations going up next door.

Police said the body found in the nearby alley is the city's 15th homicide of 2017.

"It scares me,” Lowe said. “It scares me for my tenants, the kids in the neighborhood, the school."

Lowe lives in Mason County.

"When I go home, I can breathe. When I come into town, I stress. It is bad. It is so bad in Huntington now. You see it everywhere."

While several mothers who were picking up their children from the elementary school said they were scared or nervous about the homicide, not everyone feels the same way.

James Fox lives across the street and tells us he refuses to live in fear.

"Personally it doesn't make me nervous."

Both Fox and Lowe believe, like most of the crime in the city, the homicide is drug-related.

If so, Lowe knows what it's like. After an injury on the job in 1998, he became addicted to drugs in 2000.

"It started with pills and it went to heroin," he said.

He only found sobriety with a three-year prison stint in 2013.

"It straightened my life up."

Lowe said these days he's trying to do the right thing and he wants everyone else to do the same.

He urges neighbors to stand up for your community. Help the cops. If you see something going on, let the law know, even if it's just an anonymous tip.

"I think the community needs to step up and say something and let people know what's going on in their neighborhood," Lowe said.

Police are not releasing many details at this time, including what time they think the man was killed. His name has not been released, and no arrests have been made. Investigators are not releasing any motive or cause of death at this time either.
