UPDATE | High school teacher arrested on child porn charges

Russell Independent Schools Superintendent Sean Horne released a statement following the arrest of a high school teacher:

Sam Beason, 47, of Ashland, taught at Russell High School at the time of his arrest. He is listed as a math teacher on the school's website. Horne confirmed to WSAZ that Beason resigned Tuesday morning.

Beason is charged with five counts of possession or viewing of

, and one count of

originating or received within the commonwealth to induce a minor to engage in sexual or other prohibited activities.

The superintendent released this statement Tuesday afternoon:

To our Russell Family, The School District wishes to inform our community of an important matter of public concern. Before school started this morning, Superintendent Horne was made aware that a teacher had been arrested from Russell High School. As of today, the teacher is no longer employed by the Russell Independent School District. The matter is currently being investigated by the Ashland Police department in conjunction with the Flatwoods Police Department. No further information is available at this time. We take these matters very seriously and the safety of our students continues to be our top priority."

Beason is in the Boyd County Detention Center without bond.

The Ashland Police Department arrested Beason.
