A woman from Huntington accused of stabbing her husband to death with a decorative dagger pleaded guilty Monday to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, the Cabell County Prosecutor's Office says.

Jennifer Via originally faced a murder charge in the death of her husband Thomas Via. He died in November 2017 after a stabbing at the couple's home in the 900 block of 28th Street.

Jennifer Via originally maintained that the incident was an accident.

Jury selection was set to get underway Monday morning until Via took the plea deal.

A reconsideration of her sentence is set for Aug. 19.


UPDATE 10/10/18 @ 10:10 p.m.

A woman from Huntington accused of stabbing her husband to death with a decorative dagger was arraigned Wednesday morning in Cabell County Circuit Court.

Jennifer Via is accused of killing her husband, Thomas Via, with a 14-inch decorative dagger at the couple’s home last November in the 900 block of 28th Street.

Via told police the two had been "horse playing," and Thomas was stabbed accidentally.

Investigators say Jennifer Via had a history of domestic violence toward her husband.

She's due back in court Nov. 19 for a pretrial hearing, pending a psychological evaluation.

A woman accused of stabbing her husband to death with a decorative dagger has been denied bond.

Jennifer Via appeared Friday morning in a Cabell County courtroom.

Investigators say the victim, Thomas Via, died Nov. 4, 2017, after he was stabbed with a 14-inch decorative dagger at the couple's home in the 900 block of 28th Street in Huntington.

Jennifer Via told police the two had been "horse playing" with her husband and that he was stabbed accidentally after he "backed into a letter opener."

Investigators say Jennifer Via, who had a history of domestic violence toward her husband, told several different stories about what happened.

The case of a woman accused of stabbing her husband to death with a decorative dagger is headed to a grand jury.

Jennifer Lynn Via appeared Wednesday in court for a preliminary hearing. Investigators say there was probable cause to send the case to the next grand jury.

Investigators say Via's husband, Thomas Via, died Nov. 4, 2017, after he was stabbed with a 14-inch decorative dagger at the couple's home in the 900 block of 28th Street in Huntington.

Jennifer Via told investigators she had been "horse playing" with her husband and that he was stabbed accidentally after he "backed into a letter opener."

The dagger went 7 inches into the victim's back, penetrating his heart. He was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

A Huntington woman was arrested Tuesday in the stabbing death of her husband, Cabell County court records show.

Jennifer Lynn Via, 48, is charged with murder.

Investigators say Via's husband, Thomas Via, died Nov. 4 after he was stabbed with a 14-inch decorative dagger at the couple's home in the 900 block of 28th Street.

Jennifer Via told investigators she had been "horse playing" with her husband and that he was stabbed accidentally after he "backed into a letter opener."

The dagger went 7 inches into the victim's back, penetrating his heart. He was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say Jennifer Via told several different stories about what had happened.

According to the criminal complaint, she had "a long history of domestic violence toward the victim, including attempting to run him over with a motor vehicle."

Cabell County court records show numerous charges against Jennifer Via dating back to 2010, including malicious wounding, domestic battery and disorderly conduct.

She was arraigned Tuesday night in Cabell County Magistrate Court.


UPDATE 11/7/17 @ 10:10 a.m.

Huntington Police tell WSAZ they are investigating the stabbing death of a man as a homicide.

Police say Thomas Via, of Huntington, died after being stabbed Saturday night at a home in the 900 block of 28th Street.

HPD says no arrests have been made in the investigation, but they are working the Cabell County Prosecutors Office.

Huntington Police report one man is dead, and a woman is being questioned following a domestic situation that led to a stabbing Saturday night.

Police tell WSAZ the stabbing occurred just before 8:00 Saturday night, at a home on the 900 block of 28th Street South in Huntington.
