Ky. mayor accused of hitting juvenile with car and driving away

PULASKI CO., Ky. (WYMT) -- The mayor of Somerset is accused of hitting a juvenile with his car and then leaving the scene.

Kentucky State Police say the collision happened Sunday evening at South Maple Street in Somerset.

Troopers say a juvenile riding a bike was hit by a vehicle, which then drove away.

After investigating, troopers identified the driver as Mayor Edward Girdler of Somerset.

Girdler was cited to Pulaski District Court for the charges of leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid or assistance.

The young cyclist was taken to the Lake Cumberland Regional Medical Center in Somerset, then airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. We do not know his current condition.

Police are still investigating the collision.
