UPDATE: One dead in crash involving cruiser with deputies and inmate inside

We now know the name of the woman killed in a crash Tuesday on US 23.

Johnson County Coroner J.R. Frisby confirmed to WYMT Tuesday night that Betty Jewel Moore, 90, of Van Lear, died in the crash.

Police say Moore was making a U-turn when she collided with a Pike County Sheriff's Deputy's cruiser.

At least one person is dead after a major crash on U.S. 23 in Johnson County.

The crash happened near C&C Tax and Bookkeeping Services in Paintsville, WYMT reports.

W.R. Castle Fire-Rescue asks drivers to avoid the area as crews respond to the scene. The road is expected to open in about 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

Authorities say a red Toyota Camry was making a U-turn when it collided head-on with a Pike County Sheriff's deputy's cruiser. There were two people in the red car, and police say the passenger of that car is dead. The coroner was called to the scene.

WYMT was told two deputies were in the cruiser, along with one inmate they were transporting. Officials have not released details about where the deputies were taking the inmate or the condition of all three people at this time.


A major crash has closed U.S. 23 in Johnson County.

All four lanes are closed in the Nippa, Kentucky area, according to 911 dispatchers.

No other information is available at this time.
