A man is facing charges after an incident involving a knife that put a Kanawha County elementary school on lockdown Tuesday morning.

Tommy Athens is charged with brandishing for the incident Tuesday morning, but he is also charged with destruction of property and petit larceny for a Monday night incident.

According to a criminal complaint, on Monday night Athens was caught on video surveillance walking onto someone's property. Deputies say he kicked out a portion of the railing on the rear deck of the residence on West Main Street in the St. Albans area. The complaint states that Athens stole a blue bicycle from the home and was seen on video riding away on it.

On Tuesday morning, deputies say the victim from Monday's incident spotted Athens walking on Winfield Road. They say when the victim went to confront him, he pulled a large knife from his clothes.

This happened near Anne Bailey Elementary School. The school was on lockdown for about 10 minutes Tuesday morning as a precaution until deputies detained Athens.
