UPDATE: Man dies after fire in Putnam County

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- According to the state Fire Marshal's office, a man has passed away after his home was destroyed in a fire last week in the Bancroft area.

The fire happened last Monday along North River Lane near the Bancroft Volunteer Fire Department.

Family and neighbors say there were several explosions as firefighters attempted to enter the home to rescue the man.

Volunteers from the Eleanor Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Two Eleanor firefighters went in and rescued him. Family members say they're grateful for their heroic actions.

Several dogs and cats were also rescued from the home.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man is on life support after his home was engulfed by fire Monday night in the Bancroft area.

Crews still aren't certain what caused the blaze, which is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal's office.

Family and neighbors say there were several explosions as firefighters attempted to enter the home along North River Lane. Crews from the Bancroft Volunteer Fire Department, located just across the street, as well as volunteers from the Eleanor Volunteer Fire Department realized the man was still in his home.

Two Eleanor firefighters went in to rescue him. Family members say they're grateful for their heroic actions.

"I wish him the best, I wish his family the best," firefighter Tyler Sowards said. "They're in my prayers. Knowing what I know now, there was really nothing I could have done different. I did the best I could. The firefighter with me did the best he could. Really, we're just praying for him and hoping for the best now."

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A home is a total loss after a fire in the Bancroft area.

It happened Monday night along North River Lane near the volunteer fire department.

Firefighters say they pulled out one man who had to be taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Several dogs and cats were also rescued from the home.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
