UPDATE: Man sentenced for beating death in Huntington

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 2/13/19 @ 5 p.m.
A man charged in another man's murder in 2017 entered a Kennedy plea to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, according to the Cabell County Prosecutor's Office.

Deland Steelman made the plea last week. A Kennedy plea means the defendant does not admit guilt but accepts the court's punishment.

Steelman also was sentenced to a five-year enhancement due to his criminal history.

The victim, Ned Walker, 59, died from injuries suffered in the beating, which happened in July 2017 near the Robert C. Byrd Bridge in downtown Huntington.

Steelman was arrested later at a gas station.

A man charged with the murder of another man last summer in downtown Huntington has been indicted by a Cabell County grand jury on a murder charge.

Deland Steelman also is indicted for first-degree robbery.

Ned Walker, 59, died from injuries suffered in the beating, which happened in July 2017 near the Robert C. Byrd Bridge.

Steelman was arrested later at a gas station.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The name of a man found dead after being allegedly beaten to death has been released.

Huntington Police Chief Joe Ciccarelli tells WSAZ that Ned Walker, 59, died from injuries suffered in the beating early Friday morning.

Police say a group of homeless people were drinking together in an alley near the Robert C. Byrd Bridge in Huntington,when a dispute led to violence.

Deland Steelman, 32, of Huntington, is charged with first- and second-degree murder.

Steelman was picked up at a gas station within minutes of a 911 call that happened early Friday morning.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police have released more information after a man was allegedly beaten to death Friday morning.

Police say a group of homeless people were drinking together in an alley near the Robert C. Byrd Bridge in Huntington.

A dispute happened that led to violence.

Deland Steelman, 32, of Huntington, is charged with first- and second-degree murder.

Steelman was picked up at a gas station within minutes of the 911 call that happened early Friday morning.

The victim has not been identified.

Court documents say the victim suffered blunt force injuries to his face.

The incident was captured on video surveillance.

The man was found behind a building early Friday morning.

It was the third violent death in Huntington in the last two weeks.

"I think the accomplishments over the last several weeks are nothing short of remarkable in terms of being able to wrap up some of these violent crimes cases," Chief Joe Ciccarelli said at a news conference Friday.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man is charged with murder in the death of man found behind a business.

Deland Steelman, 32, of Huntington is charged with first and second degree murder.

According to the criminal complaint, Steelman beat a man to death in the 500 block of 3rd Avenue late Thursday night.

Court documents say the victim suffered blunt force injuries to his face.

The incident was captured on video surveillance.

The man was found behind a building early Friday morning.

Police have not released the name of the victim.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police tell WSAZ a suspect is in custody and the case of man's body found Friday morning is a murder.

The body was discovered early Friday morning between 3rd and 4th Avenues behind a business.

The body was slumped against a building along the alley.

The names involved have not been released.

More details are expected to be released Friday afternoon.
