MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's the burger bust that's creating a buzz around Milton. Following a traffic stop Monday, officers with the Milton Police Department say they smelled weed inside a car that had just left a drive-thru at a local restaurant. After a quick search by a K-9, officers found the weed in a very unexpected place.
"Just complete and utter shock," Officer Sean Beckett said. "When we were searching through the vehicle and my corporal said, 'I found the dope. It was in the cheeseburger.' "
Officers say one of the men in the car tried stashing a small bag of weed in a Wendy's Baconator.
"Of course, he said that's not mine," Beckett said, "it was in the cheeseburger when I got it. They must have put it on there at the store."
Officers say, obviously, that was not the case.
"When we checked Wendys.com, we did in fact find out that marijuana is not an ingredient on the Baconator," Officer Beckett said.
The department has had some fun with this crime. Officers posted a tongue-in-cheek post stating, "For the public's information, hiding marijuana inside a cheeseburger will not keep our K9 from smelling it." The post now has more than 4,000 shares and hundreds of likes.
"Just the amount of views and shares that it had ... is just unbelievable," Beckett said. "Just little Podunk Milton, West Virginia. Finding weed in a cheeseburger."
"This is something that doesn't happen every day, and we've kind of had fun with it. You still have to stay professional about this, but you can't talk about this without smiling."

MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Marijuana was recovered Monday from a Wendy’s cheeseburger, which Milton Police were quick to point out was clearly not the restaurant’s fault.

Officers say a small bag of marijuana was seized Monday from a Baconator after a traffic stop.
“For the public's information, hiding marijuana inside a cheeseburger will not keep our K9 from smelling it,” the department posted.
Officers went on to say, “Naturally the suspect's statement when the officers found the marijuana was, ‘I just got that burger; they must have put it on there when I got it.' "
The post did not state if the suspect faces any drug-related charges.
