GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The name of a former middle school teacher arrested Wednesday in connection with an inappropriate relationship with a female student has been released.

Derrick Elliott, 57, of Russell, Kentucky, faces charges after investigators say he had an inappropriate relationship with a student when he was a teacher at Russell Middle School.

Derrick Elliott, 57, of Russell, Kentucky, is charge with second-degree sodomy, according to a complaint warrant from Greenup County District Court.

Investigators say the contact with the student, who was less than 14 years old when it started, happened from February 2018 through this month. Elliott was a Russell Middle School teacher at the time.

In a statement earlier Wednesday, the Superintendent of Russell Independent Schools said the Russell Middle School teacher is no longer employed by the school district and is prohibited from returning to district property.

The matter is currently being investigated by the Flatwoods Police Department.

"We take these matters very seriously and the safety of our students continues to be our top priority," said Superintendent Dr. M. Sean Horne.
