UPDATE 11/11/15 @ 1:33 a.m.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A drive-by shooting prompted the shooting death of a young-woman from Charleston who was just trying to check on her next-door-neighbors.

The incident happened early Tuesday morning on Lakin Street in Charleston.

According to Charleston Police Matthew Roohollani, 30 of Charleston, admitted to firing the fatal shot that hit Andrena Smith.

He is now facing a charge of first degree murder.

Just minutes before the shooting Roohollani's home had been hit in a drive-by-shooting.

Smith, 22, who heard the shots, went next door to check on her neighbors. She was shot and died at the scene.

According to the criminal complaint it was not the first time that Roohollani's house had been hit by gunfire in recent days.

Investigators say a witness told them that shortly before the most recent drive-by-shooting-incident (early Tuesday) he saw the suspect carrying a rifle with a mounted scope saying "he would be ready" if the suspected shooter, Jonathan Bush, came back.

The witness, who police say went to Roohollani's home five to ten minutes after the drive-by-shooting incident Tuesday, knocked on the door loudly and announced his presence to the defendant-- while standing off to the side. He told investigators that was because he knew that he'd just taken the rifle in his home and he feared Matthew would shoot him.

As he was being walked to a police cruiser Tuesday night, Roohollani told reporters, "All I have to say is I was defending my family. It's a tragedy. Andrena Smith was like my aunt. I loved her, and I just can't believe it."

Earlier Tuesday Charleston Police arrested Jonathan Bush, 32 of Charleston, and charged him with wanton endangerment in connection to the drive-by-shooting that happened prior to the Smith being killed.

Bush admitted to police that he shot at Roohollani's home on three different occasions.

According to the criminal complaint that charges Bush he admitted that he had recently separated from Roohollani's sister who lived in the Lakin Street home with him. Bush said he felt threatened by her brother (Roohollani) and because of that he was trying to scare him by firing at the home.

The complaint states that in one of the three shooting incidents Bush was driving a Preston's Funeral Home limo.

Roohollani will be in court on November 18.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help Smith's family pay for funeral costs.
