UPDATE | Jury returns guilty verdict in Institute murder trial

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 12/5/19 @ 12 p.m.
A Kanawha County jury has recommended life without mercy after returning a guilty verdict Thursday afternoon in a murder trial.

The jury found Juan Chic guilty of first degree murder in the death of Andre Leonard. According to court documents, West Virginia State Police responded to a shooting at 112 Elm Street in Institute on August 15, 2018. When they arrived, Andre Leonard was found dead. He had been shot multiple times.

A sentencing date has not yet been released.

UPDATE 12/4/19 @ 6 p.m.
Jury deliberations are set to begin at 9 a.m. Thursday in a murder trial in Kanawha County Court.

The jury will be deliberating the case of Juan Chic, who is on trial for first-degree murder.

Chic is accused of shooting Andre Leonard near the West Virginia State University campus in August 2018.

There were several developments in Wednesday's session. The State recommended a sentence of life without mercy in their statement to the jury. The State showed photos of the scene to the courtroom, pointing out a bullet that struck the car that sped away from scene.

The defense motioned for acquittal on one count, but it was denied. The defense stated Chic was innocent, and merely "at the wrong place at the wrong time."

The jury selection process for a 2018 murder case began in Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge Tabit's courtroom Monday morning.

Juan Chic has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting Andre Leonard near the WVSU campus in August 2018.

Following the selections, opening statements will be given.

We’re learning new information after a man was arrested late Saturday night in connection with a deadly shooting near the WVSU campus.

Court documents say Juan Chic is charged with First Degree Murder, a charge that carries the possibility of life in in prison.

Court documents say West Virginia State Police responded to a shooting at 112 Elm Street in Institute Wednesday evening, and when they arrived, Andre Leonard was found dead. He had been shot multiple times.

Documents describe a witness telling Troopers he was with Chic prior to the shooting. He goes on to say he watched Chic go over to a silver Chrysler 300 with a man inside and then watched as Chic gunned down Leonard.
The court documents also say that Chic’s girlfriend told Troopers she was with him in that vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Chic is in the South Central Regional Jail, being held without bond.

The shooting incident unfolded the evening of Wednesday, August 15 about a block away from the WVSU campus. The gunfire prompted campus officials to briefly lockdown the school buildings as a precaution.

Authorities have arrested a person of interest in connection to a fatal shooting.

Law enforcement arrested Juan Chic Saturday night.

Chic is a person of interest in a fatal shooting that left 20 year old Andre Leonard dead Wednesday in Institute.

He is headed to Kanawha Magistrate to be arraigned.

Troopers have a person of interest in connection with a deadly shooting in Institute.

West Virginia State Police investigators are looking for Juan Chic.

The incident was reported shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening on Elm Street in Institute.

Andre Leonard, who is in his mid to late twenties, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

West Virginia State Police troopers are making progress on a deadly shooting investigation.

The incident was reported shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening on Elm Street in Institute. Andre Leonard, who is in his mid to late twenties, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators are staying tight-lipped about any potential suspects.

After issuing a BOLO (be on the lookout) Wednesday night for a silver Chrysler 300C, troopers seized a vehicle of that description.

Troopers say there is no immediate threat to the area, but say it is a good idea for neighbors to stay vigilant.

West Virginia State Police troopers say that the people involved in a fatal shooting Wednesday night knew each other.

First Sgt. Michael Anderson says that Andre Leonard, who is in his mid to late twenties, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Troopers say they are speaking with a person of interest but are not releasing any suspect information at this time.

They add while there is no immediate threat to the area Troopers say it is a good idea for neighbors to stay vigilant.

The incident was reported shortly after six Wednesday evening on Elm Street in Institute.

UPDATE 8/15/18 @ 8:00 p.m.
West Virginia State University was put on a precautionary lockdown following a deadly shooting in Institute Wednesday evening.

A spokesperson for the school said students and facility were issued that lockdown after the shooting on Elm Street which is one block away from the school's campus.

The lockdown lasted for about two hours and since has been lifted.

West Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate the deadly shooting that happen in the 100 block of Elm Street.

One person was shot and has died from their injuries.

Troopers are scene, no information has been released about a possible suspect.

Metro 911 dispatchers say one person is dead after a shooting in Institute Wednesday evening.

The shooting took place in the 100 block of Elm Street near a residential area shortly after six o'clock.

Right now, there is no information on the suspect wanted in connection with the shooting.

Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies are on scene investigating.
